The .Indianapolis Qaztti «, a truly loyal and promising paper, lately started in that region bo terribly afflicted with a copper** head democracy, thus comments on the lenient sentence of Judge Smith in the cub of the four lately convicted conspirators: .We announced’ln our paper the other day the faot that four of the Morgan county conspirators, vis: Andrew J: terry, Wm. Dillman; Johh Caldwell, and Jacob Grose oloae, had been foand guilty by States Jaryi. Day "before'yesterday Judge Caleb 11. Smith pronounced their sentence •—which was a fine of five hundred dollars eadn -This ib the lovtut limit ot the penalty in suoh cases. We suppose, judg ing from this fact, that if the law; had placed tho minimum limit at ten dollars, nr but one dollar even, bur amiable and most lenient Judge would have fixed their'pen alty at the same 1 We think Judge Smith has made a mis take—a serious mistake. A morning con temporary, in notioing the matter, thinks he “doubtless has good reasons for hia sen tence'’—for making it so light. Of course he has what he considers good reasons; but he has taken tho wrongview of the matter. We greatly-fear he has. He has made the common mistake whieh has unfortunately characterized the course of the Adminis tration towards traitors and-treason ever since the rebellion commenced. Leniency to traitors Is but encouragement to treason. Had traitors, the aiders of traitors, conspi rators, spies, pirates and guerrillas been dealt with by the authorities as they de served and as they Bhould have been, at the •start and Utroughoutdhe contest, the rebel lion. would have been substantially ended and the country safe from copperheads in oar midst, long ago. It is the worst of mistakes to treat conspirators and traitors against the government with lenienoy or forbearance. It has the opposite effect of that desired or expected, it but encoura ges the evil, while it brings the government into contempt. These men were guilty of a cosspiraey to resist the laws of the Federal Govern ment, in Lime of war, —and in a way that gives to the act the character of treason, it is in foot, morally if not technically, one form of treason. They encoaraged deser tion from tho army, attempted to protect deserters, resisted and fired upon United States omcers and soldiers who were in dischsrge of their duty of reclaiming de serters. This is, we repeat, one form and beginning of treason. It is different, 1 for more heinous and dangerous to tbe peace and safety of the public than simple con spiracy to resist some civil law or process of the Government. It is a military of fence, and being in time of war, was com mitted with, irtaeonaiU intent and efftcL Their punishment should have been ex emplary. They should have been made an example of to deter others. We say this without the slightest personal ieeling against the parues—without knowing or oaring who they aro; indeed if they were our own personal friends or relatives, we would say the same. It Is the good of the country we look at—nothing else. They should not have been let off with simply a fine, but should have gone to prison lor at least one year or ddnng the war. What does the penalty of five hundred dollars amount to ? The Order to which they un doubtedly belong—Knights of the Golden Circle—will readily enough pay their fine, and doubtless stand ready to pay similar fiues for others of the same sort. We say that Judge Smith has made a mistake, and one that we deeply for we fear that instead of having a good efl.ect upon : the vile copperheads and traitor-sympathizers in our midst, it will have a bad ell'sct—an effect directly the oppoaito of that hoped for and Intended by the decision. And we shall only bo too glad if he does not see that he has made a mistake before the next six months shall have passed, by the en couragement it will have given to other con spirators in our State. Imfoutasck or rPs Bed llivee to tue Bebels. —Wo showed the other day that the enocees of tbo hake Proridence Canal, sixty miles, above Vicksburg, would com pletely destroy the Bed Biver connections of the rebels. This Bed Birer region ia of tbs greatest importance to tbo enemy. By means of it they have heretofore bed access to vast amounts of supplies, including those indispensable articles, jsalt, sugar and "mo lasses. Some "idea of jtho relianoo placed opon the Bed Biver country by the rebel* may ba formed from tbo announcement of a correspondent of the Mobila Aivcrtiiir, who says that the feat of the ram Queen of tha West, in' running by the Vicksburg batteries, was followed by a rise in the price of salt to sixty dollars a barrel. Pusxlujiihocs Peach.— 11 War never leaves where it found a nation. It is never to bo entered into without mature delibera tion : not a deliberation lebgthened but into a perplexing indecision, but a delib eration leading to a sue and fixed judg ment. When so taken up, it la not to bo abandoned without reasons as valid,: as fully and aa extensively considered. Peaoe may bo made aa unadvisedly as war. Noth ing is so rash as fear; and the couneels ef pusillanimity very rarely put off, whilst they are always sure to aggravate, the evils from which they would fl j."~£urkt. ; Tbs Isjuaiia to the Uabbot Labi.— One of. the engineers on board tbo Harriet lent at the time of her capture, informs a Sow Orleans correspondent that ehe can never be of any use to tbe rebels.
