fittslrorgtt .tette/. MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 9. Qreat Union Meeting in Uniontown. On.Moadny evening, 2d ins L, the largest meeting, that ever assembled in Payette oouaty was held at the Court House in Uniontown. Great enthusiasm prevailed. Judge Bwuo, In response to repeated calls, arose and said he was glad to meet so f many of hie fellow citixena, and that he would “talk" to them, *‘and such a talking (eays the Standard) no public meeting eTer got in that'court house.” The next speak* er was Lieut Jon* D. The recom mendation of the meeting to the Mends of the Union “to orgmiiomediatilf into <u oociitiontj* in., is excellent, and one which we earnestly commend'to the Mends of the Union eTerywhen.; Then never was a time when it was so incumbent upon loyal men to combine in opposition to tnasona ble combinations. The Government seems to hare left this part .of its work to the people, and they mnat at it, or all the blood jhed in thl* war will haxe been shed in xaln. We ban laws, but the ministers of the law must be snsthined, and in ho way oan this wholesome reign of law be so well second as by organised bands of loyal oitl- who, like Jxcxeow, are neolred that “the Union MUST AND SUAT.T. Wo ujseneilttte opinion tferdeje when we published an extract of a letter from ex-Governor Sxrxona to “T. L,” in whici he took strong ground in faxor of the rebellion, that it ires not written to a Soathem traitor, but to eome neighboring JOtmoerat, and that Capt. Gunnzxo, the rebel spy, who was arrested at Hilton Head, was carrying a,copy of itto his and the ex-OoTernor’s friends in Dixie. In this we find onr conjecture was precisely oor- j rect' u : . . .. The Hartford Tlare states that Colonel Beymour’s ferociously anti-War letter late ly found on a rebel prisoner at Hilton Head; was not written to a Sdttthern traitor, bnt 10 who resides atNyaek, V and dots business in this city, and who gare sereral copies of it for private circula tion._ Is it at all strange that a rebel officer on his way to Dixie should value and take with, him a copy of that letter? ■ j lx 1861 we charged the Democratic lead ers of the North with having deceived their rebel co-partisans of ; the Boulh, in in ducing them to believe that if they should make war upon the government they would i >7 them; for this they certainly did do. for a time those leaders feigned lpy alty; and then, instead of deceiving the Southern rebels, they deoeived the goveni ■ -meat. Under a loud profession of fidelity, ' they got many of their men into places ef power. Having secured that point, they j went to work to betray tile government into the hands.of its enemiia. Their perfidy was deeper and more Judas-like the*. any thing we should have thought of charging upon any beings wearing the human form. HIGHLY IMPORTANT FROM; UTAH. One or two more eooh depredations as those committed on the fine East Indiman, the Jaoob Beil, will drive our American commerce from the eeaa. The increased risks and consequently increased rates of insurance already deprive our shippers of the advantages of competition in the freight markets. . They'cannot carry, as oheaply as either British or French bottoms; they are rapidly losing their trade; and in a little while their vessels will he compelled to Be at the wharves, to the damage of nearly every interest, in the city, from the owner and the importer to the sailor and the ste vedore, including the city government it *®lL NeW York would lose in a. week by this means, would more :than cover the expense ef a whole fleet of privateers. {Something must be done instantly to stop the ravages of the armed enemies of trade already fitted out hy British capital .and manned by. British seamen. If the mana gers of our foreign affairs are not prepared to announce to the British government that a repetition of these outrages wUI bc re garded as an act of war, r the p*eople should demand of them that reprisals be. made at once upon British commerce. We shall have no security until some step of fcu*d is taken. - A great change has been effected in English opinion, it is true, as we show elsewhere, but it is doubtful if that change will soon reach the administration. It may pretend to defer to pubUo sentiment, but so long as it remains secretly hostile to us it wiU find some way in which to dam age our interests. Everybody who reads the foreign journals is now fully aware that Earl EuaselFbould have prevented the qpess of the Alabama or 2VO if he had been disposed. He was informed of her character as early as the 28d of June, by Mr. Adams, who placed the most indubita ble evidence, before the Secretary. Other avidenoe was.banded in on the din of July, 22d of July, and the 24th of July, all going to show that the 290 was intended* to prey upon American commerce. One of the affi davits presented was from , an English sailor, who swore that he and thirty others were enlisted and taken on board the ves sel under a Captain Butcher, and that she was to be employed as a privateer under the Confederate States of America. Five days after Mr. Adams’ last remon strance, Earl Bussell got an opinion from tho law officers of the Crown, to the efleot that the “290 * ought to-be stopped; but be fore the order for stopping her could be sent down to Liverpool She had sailed. She sailed, without register or clearance, under command of Captain Butcher, an EngUah subject, with fifty men, took another fifty off LapeLynits, went to the Azores, where she was joined by a bark and a steamer, both British, bringing her guns and 'stores from London and Liverpool, fifty more men, and “Captain Bemmes, ~> all three vesselsaUU under the British flag. Berimes thea took the command, ran up the Confederate flag, and christened her the “Alabama.” Most of the erew belonged to the “English Baval Beserre,’ 1 were trained gunners, and were to reoeive from the Confederate government half the value of every American ship and cargo they destroyed. It is difficult to conceive that menso htgfr in office as Earl Bussell should connive at a violation of the neutrality laws of his own ■t*te, and of the requirements of the Queen’s proclamation, with a view to making secret war upon the commcroe of a friendly na- j tion. But the correspondence in the irufft ; leaves us no other inference. Two months 1 before 1 I **«hs perfitUeui tmik. emit te the acOjas sad Hsx«l vita csrmadjrk” had left her moorings, the British govern- I meat was told of her character ahd destin ation, and trough the tale was almost dia ned in its ears, it made no effort to prevent thedeparture until it was known to bo too late. Even now, with the examplohd tho Alabama under its eyes; when the Terr ffsshes of our bunting Bast Indiaman' may bo almost seen.from Downing street, other vessels are fitting out with the same open ness and the same impunity.
