FBtDAY HOBNIS'O, JAN."'S. u Plot* of the Rebel Democracy. There is no doubt hat that intrigue*, dark, deep and wide, are going /coward between the openly rebellion* and'secrctly rebellions wiapj>f.wlmt,~by a fflonstrous misnomer, it called the M Democratic par ty/* The peace project*, to tome of which we have already attention; the bold and audacious coup of Gortraor Skymour, on the eery day of his inauguration, to put the entire rale of the city of New York into the hands of his party, in defiance of the Beaete; the proposed “National Con vention,” a conclavewhicb, if ever held, zrill be-under the solo'management of this same traitorous faction, ali atteet that the object of the party—if a set of traitorous eoMpiraton may be called ja party—is; to wreck oar government, introduce a reign of anarchy anjd terror, and thus give the •laveholding rebels a/triumph over the loyal men of the country who are strag gling to maintain the Union and the Gov ernment. This alarming hypothesis is strengthen ed very nraeh by a recently published let ter from Gkoeq* N. S-UiDK&a, who writes, “On the wing,** to Honatto Skymoch, DXAB SICHMOSD, JofiLZ.VxB BtTBSV,Chab. There is I . need that history should be marked by the 1 utter annihilation of the debt created by the conspirators against the rights and. lib erties of American citizens-and-States. The rebellion, as a thing of open warfare, may be reeling to ;ta fall; but theso deep and wide spread plots prove that Slavery is yet a giant power In the nation, the poisonous fibres of which reach to every part of the body poli tic. But, great as-is its power, it has re oeived its death-wound, and however vio lent may bo it*, dying struggles, its doom is sealed. Disaster at Vicksburg. General Shtkmas has sustained a terri ble reverse at Vicksburg, with a deplorable loss of life. This disaster is the rtsalt of mismanagement on the part of General Grast, whose retrogade move ment, with the greatest of the three armies of the West, to Holly Springs, where he yet is lying in utter uselessness, leaving Suenuas to operate alone against Vicks-, burg. ' • Why the latter pressed on under the cir cumstances is a question, we cannot answer. Perhaps he coveted the undivided glory of capturing that rebel stronghold; but if so, dearly has the country paid for his ambi tion and temerity. He ought to have wait ed for Grant, «r at least for his army. The country c&c&ut stand such manage ment long. One army, by the blundering of its commander, is put into a position of utter uselessness, while another is rushed forward to a work to which it is inadequate. Grant, by retiring, left Bosecrans to bear the shock of the concentrated rebels, a shock which nothing hut' consummate skill and valor prevented J’rom being a fearful disaster; and the smoke of that terrible battle bad hardly cleared away until an other army, with whioh it was his impera tive and ouly duty to co-operate, is defeat ed for want of that co-operation. Rose erans was so situated that he was obliged to fight or do‘worse ; but Sherman had the choice of his own time, and is to blame for temerity. Had he been successful the oountry would have .applauded; but the event has shown that he acted rashly. It i* more than probable that some mis erable personal jealousiesjlie at the bottom of these disasters—jealousies of the same kind'that occasioned the failure of the Pope, campaign, and which forced Fremont out of4he service. “Don’t give up the Ship.” So says the Louisville Journal, near the close of a long article,' Which was intended to be as strong an argument as could be made against the proclamation of Freedom. Bat we are sorry to see such a paper as the Journal engaged in a cause so indefensible, that, in the* absence of logio, it has to resort to slang which, in Pennsylvania, is the un mistakable index of secession sympathy, —for example, the following: - “It is not the voice of the abolition fao tion, bqt the voice of our country herself, appealing to us amidst the multiplied scan dals and calamities heaped upon her by the abolition faction, that demands this service at our h&nda.” - Twice, in this short sentence, is the phrase "abolition faction” introduced. Come, come, Mr. Prentico, that phrase is played out among sensible.people ; and the 'tut you make of it recalls to mind the poor triok of Gen. Beauregard, when-he ordered the Union soldier# to be called abolitionist#. The time was when some timid people shrank from the application of the term, bat .that.time is past, and its use as a bog* gaboo if.abmt as effective as a blare of gongs in aroatile.
