Hooker's Report of' the Battle of Williamsburg in Ray Last. WitataC - Spirit of ths Tinto, of this week, publishes Gan. lieomex'a official report of that bloody and important engagement. It was tarnished to the editor by Get. HOOLIA him self on the Saturday previous. It is long, full, circumstantial, and clear ; but why-its publication was so long nappressed, and why it was at length brought out in the manner just stated, are questions which we shall leave our readers to solve for:themselves. Our Washington correspondentts dispatch, given in another column, mentions this publication, and makes a brief quotation from it. As it forms in important and extraordinary chapter in the history of this terrible war, we give as much of it n. 5 will afoot the fret that one sin-. gle corps of the Army of the Potomac was al lowed to contend for an entire day with thrice their numbers, although there were thirty; thousand Union soldier , ' within supporting l distance. After - mentioning the march from I Yorktown, Gen. Bootee thus describes the: situation ofthinga at Williatusburg : l The first work that presented its If wall Fort Magruder, and this-was standing at the; junction of the Yorktown and Hampton roads,' , , and on each side of it -Wes a cordon of re-! doubts, extending las "far as could be seen.' Subsequently I found their number to be! thirteen and extending entirety scrolls thel , Peninsula--the right and left of, them reeting on the waters of the , York and James rivers! Approaching them front the south, they are' concealed by heavy forest„nntil the oheervee is within lees than a mile of their locality/ Where the forest had been standing neared than this distance, the trees had been felled; in order , that the:occupanta of the redoubt+, Might have timelfuoties of the bpproaclat of an enemy, and early strikatim with artillery. The trees hid been felled in this manner od both sides;of the road on which we had adl vaned, for a breadth of aimnst half a mile', and the same Wa4;the nee on the Yorktown road. Between the edge of the felled timber and the fort, was label{ of clear, arable land, 600 or 700 yards in width. This:whildotted all over with rifle pits. reconnection with the redoubts themselves', I may be, permitted to titate thatllotind them , standing near the pastern. and southern verge of a slightly elevated. plain, the slopes of which were furrowed with widening mined, with an 'sitarst boundless, gently undulating plain, reaching across the peninsula, and ex'. tending to the north and west as far. as the' eye can reach. The landscape is highly piel turesque, and note littleheightened by the large trees and Venerable spire! of Willi met burg, two miles fliitant. 71. • Fort Magruder 'appttars to bathe largest of the redoubts—its crest measuring nearly half mile, with substantial parapets, ditches, me-. guinea ate. This was located ta .command. the Yorktown and Hampton roads, and the redoubts in its vicinity to command the ra• dues, !which the guns of Fort Magruder oouhl not sueep. Being ispavetat of a retreating crisis', Ido - ed it my dory to lose no time in waking the dispel anion sition of my forces to attack, regardtru . of t etc number, and position, crotpt to accomplish the re s. // with ad inset po . )llslbie maces/ice of life. At 7% o'clock, Brig. Gen. While this was going on in 'front, Captain Smith, by a skillful disposition of his battery,. held complete commind of the road, .which subsequently, by few well-directed' shots, was turned to good account. The foregoing furnishes a 'faithful narra tive of the disposition of rtty command throughout this eventful day. Between 4 and b o'clock, Gan. Kearney, with all his characteristic gallantry, arrived. on the ground at the hearof hie division, an d after having secured their positions, my_ divi. don was withdrawn' from the contest, 'and held as a reserve 'until dark, when the ;battle ended, after a prolonged and severs conflict against three times my number, directed by the mostaccomplished General of the Rebel army, Major General J. E. Johnston, assisted by Generals Longstreet, Pryor, °Wilson and Pickett, with commands selected from the best. troops In their army. The lilt of killed and wounded attests the character of the contest. The killed of the enemy must have bean doable my own • of the wounded ,- we moot estimate. Hirt hundred were . left id the hospitals 'at it liamsburg, and others . were distributed among the private houses - of this eity,..while all the available tenementain the vicinity of timbale: tie are filled with them. Three hnedred prisr oners were taken. I have omitted to mention.thearrival, early 'in the afternoon, of Brig. Gen. Heintzelman, commanding the 3d Army Corps, with his staff, and, to express my . very grateful an knowledgment for the encouragement inspired by his presence, and for the aid and support s he gave me by his counsel and conduct. .As soon as 'darkness concealed their move ments, the rebelaretreated in a state of utter demoralization, leaving'behindartillery, wag- one, etc., ate. History will not be believed, when it is told' that the noble offioers and men of my divisiOn were 'R ermitted to carry on this unequal strug gle from morning until night unaided, in the presence of more than 30,000 of 'their com rades with arms in' their hands. Nevertheless, it is true. - If we failed to capture the raped army on the plains of Williamsburg, it surely - will not be ascribed to this want , of conduct and sour- . age in my command. • The field was marked by an unusual number , of instances of • conspicuous outage and dar ing, which 'l' shall seek an early, Opportunity to bring to the notice of the Commander of the 34 Corps. ' • . At this time, I can speak . -but in general terms of the regiments and batteries engsge_d in the battle of Williamsburg.: Their list of the killed and - wounded from exiting their 'numbers will forever determine the extent of their participation in this hard-fonght, and dearly contested field. Their constancy and courage are deserving all praise. My pro found and grateful acknowledgments are ren dered to them. This is history--salhentie, sobir, _sad, startling history—suppiessaiiiill-now, and would have been suppressed for ever but for tits bold vigil/Mee of this editor. We feel as deeply ., as men can do the impor tance of oonfldenoe in. the leaders of our armies;_ but while ibis is no, we/ feel that it is'l unsafe, unwise, mete folly and delusion, to conceal such faCts as this foregoing, lost that °outdone° should be shaken. The whole: question. narrows itself to this: Why was Hooker loft unsupported? why were so many . Of his gallant troops Buffered to be slaugh tered in vain ? and why was the country cord polled to mourn as a sore disaster an affair which ought to have been a signal triumph? for it is the opinion of lien. Hooker, as ex pressed to Mr. Wilton, that "bad the 30 e 000 troops, which were at hand at Williamsburg, come forward at his call for reinforcements, be would have but had to roach out his hand /to grasp and destroy the entire . army of the enemy." Gen. Franklin'! Corps to the Late Battles. The important part taken by this gallant corps in the recent battles, is wall stated in the following letter : - . , "Since leaving Wahington, GUI; Frank lin's position had been upon the extreme left. lie had followed the line of the Potomac and hugged its shores closely,Saturday he gained Sugar Loaf Mountain, snrronnded it I-with his cavalry, cleared it of Bebe% and from a Babel signal station changed it into a look-out for our own signet corps. The Southern Chivalry. The London Daily New is very intelligent n its appreciation of the Southern °tawdry. It says The word " honor " is forever on the lips of the Southern chivalry ; but the meaning of that word seems to have long degenerated into the inferior sense of honors received, in stead of honorable conduct practiced. The Southern practice of honor is illustrated ir by. the custom of gentlemen debauchi n g lb female slaves, In order to increase their , chat/ tel property ; by Mr. Jefferson Davis: earlier practioss of repudiation of State debts; by the went transactions of his Gevernment in re - gard to oettonybythe use his supporters made cf their opportunities of 'aloe under' ir.
