The Harpers Ferry Surrender. A letter from liarper's Ferry, in the Phila . delphii inquirer, gives these interesting bits of information: "Sunday same, and with it preparations to open the battle in earnest. •It was quite early In the morning that I saw Colonel Miles talking to. Colonel Ward, of the Twelfth New York. Colonel Miles said, Get all the elfi n-is in their cellars, for we shall get a raking Are from London Heights in a short time.' "llwas brit a thort time after this conver sation that we were opened on ftim three points—from London Heights, from Mary land Heights and from, the bluffs toward Charlestown. On this latter point the works were strong, the entrenchments running from the Shenandoah to the Potomac , . Having nowdiscovcred their location, we opened on the& with a will, and the cannonading was kept up until dark; with very trifling lou - te us. During the day, however, they brought their gone on Maryland Heights to bear on our camps on Bolivar Heights, but the speedy removal of the object of their vengeance canted them to tarn their missiles in another direction.. As the day dosed Colonel Miles gave orders that at daylight on Monday we should open our guns on anything that looked ims_pbsions. • .Early on Monday morning the :batteries opened apin on the rebels,,and for some time the fire wu furious. It was then we began to hope that are would be allowed-to defend our. position u long as defense was possible, but our hope were of short &ration. The order came t ha t we should surrender, that we should yield an impregnable position to our enemy. Colonel Miles was passing to She frent, erith white Sag In his hand, when he was stmck near the knee by a shell. So newly. was the limb =instated by themisthie that it seemed as if but one single ligament held the fractur ed limb together. He was; immediately placed in - an ambulance and conveyed from the field, and - died neat day from. the effect of amputation. According to orders the white deg wari dis played all along our lines, fad Harper's Fer ry was ..eurrandered to the rebels. Colonel Miles, however, gave permission to two thou sand cavalry to out their way ontorhich they Aid in gallant -style, leaving many of their. foes in . aes,th behind them. By this iturenderr-it cannot :be called a eapturi-41te rebels "took fourteen thousand Ave hundred teed; one hundred tons of ammii nition, rations for fourteen thousand men for twenty days, fifty-seven guns (some of them the. best Parrott guns), fourteen thousand stand of arms, and four batteries of hold ar tplsry. How are the Rebels to Feed their Army! A correspondent of the Philadelphia Press writes: Row an the rebels going to feed their army .all along the Potomac ? is a question more frequently asked than easily answered—Their army is mostly massed in what is coiled the Shenandoah .valley—truly one of the most productive main in the world; but so many armies have passed through it, that it is com pletely eaten .out; and what grain was sown last year, totted in the field for want of labor to reap it. As I know by my own experience it iiimpossible' to quarter a large army there, and make it subsist on the surrounding country. The people have very little for themselves to at, let alone a half starved army of 60,000 or 100,000 men. The only way they can procure provision' from Richmond is by way of the Orange and Alexandria railroad to Manaus, and then by 1 the Managua. Gap railroad to Strasburg end from thence in wagons to their camp. ~Toirt-,. tempt to bring provisions from Stauritrin, all the way up the valley would be Itard4.4.essi ble, for the distance is stilong4hat if-would & mt. take an immense train niovW*Littually to and, fro to toot) them sup ltillfitto bring provisions bj railroad-to '• would be' far. easier for them, but stilithey run a great risk, in haying their "applies cut off. If, the npert betas that there is no con- . sidenble force of rebels.between Washington and Manassas, what will prevent our sending a large foreiunder an able general and seis ing the Manassas Gap Railroad,' The rebels will either be 'thin forced to retreat, up the Shenandoah Valley, or they will have to risk *tattier raid into Maryland or Pennsylvania; in which aura, no matter bow large their army is, it will surely be captured. ' Carl Schur: and Milroy's Report.-A Correction. Gen. Milroy writes to the N. Y. Tribune: My attention luta been called to that por- tion of my oilleial report of the fighting `of the 29th of Aaron, which reads as follows : "The enemy now earns on' in overwhelming numben. Gen. Carl Bahian had been obliged te retire with his two brigades an hour before. and -then the whole rebel force.- was turned against my brigade.". !Gdy.brave hop wen dished back balite the storm of bullets, like . chaff Were a tempest." It has been tunes! ted that this may ereate the: inPrenion that Gen. Behurs was driven of, and left the . Iteta without orders. • " . . The position occupiedby. General Soliiirs,, though but a short distanoe from tny was hidden from my view by the heavy forest hi which he was fighting, and I judged bY the 'masatien of heavy !ring that he' bad teen forced back out of the forest. But I sin formed by . General Sigel that though General Sohurs was forced back for a tuna;: to sallied and gallantly drove the rebels back woo the; railroad, and held that position againet.this attacks of the rebels, until relieved. y General Hi.oker's troops ind ordered back by General Steel. I will add that 'I have learned from a rebel Geptain recently, septa*, who was among the foroes in the forest across the railroad in, frtmt of my'brigade on She 29th, that there wirsiten brigades lying in that forest, mei aging at least 2,000 men each ; that he saw me during' the' fight, and recognized me at once; from having been' captured by my 'regi ment in the battle of Garners Ford, in July, 1861, and merely:lectured by me for his treason i and that by his order, his company End at me twice . during the fight et the 29th. • .
