Co rey, a native of Boston, Mass., who lately made his escape from Petersburg, Va., among-other interesting items of intelli gence, which we 'have already noticed, says: "After the battle of Williamsburg the merchants of Petersburg, expecting an immediate successful advance of our army upon Richmond, which had no adequate force for defence, rolled their tobacco clown to the river bank and made general ai rangementis to destroy their merchandise. Prom this time, however, while our army was intreuching in the Peninsula, con script forces began pouring into Richmond by thousands, an average of five thousand a day passing through Petersburg from I".!orth Carolina, aggregating some forty thousand in all was a subject of cur -1 rise to the rebels that we did not seize the railroid over which they passed, thusicut ling off those supplietTof new troops." It is perhaps better, for the present at least, to avoid all . references to that strata ' gin abortion of somebody's generalship, the - Peninsula campaign. But the rebels of Petersburg are neither the first, nor are they likely to be the last, of the un-mili tary critics, to be " surprised " by the pref erence shown for the York river and the Chielsahominy swamps, as a base of opera tions against Richmond, over the James river, and the higher, drier and healthier country along its banks, especially that on its eolith side, through which access was open, to an enterprising commander, to the most important railways southward,. by which not only troops, but all manner of supplies reached the rebel capital. Possi bly, what so greatly surprised the unmili tary critics of Petersburg, (who, as rebels, douttiless, very much enjoyed the feellisg— that is, felt what is called a pleased sur prise in it)---the same will no less sur prise other critics, both military and un military, as long as it stands recorded among historical facts in the annals of our country. Our Soldiers in the Late Battles. Fla none of the reports of last week's battles in Maryland, or the correspondence from the field, are theie any of those accu sations of misbehavior on the part of in dividual regiments, or brigades, or efficers of any grade, that have frequently sallied the reports of previous battles. Every regimentieems to have done its duty to the death—none flinching; every General and subordinate officer appears to have honored his rank. The applause for valor, endurance, and patience, were merited by every man wearing the - Ns tion's uniform. It must be remembered that this unflinch ing, victoriqus Union army was composed of the fever - Treated, battle-decimated, re treating regiments of McClellan, which left the PetunOulti a few weeks ago; of the shatteredLtregiments and brigades of Pope, which Sfrived in Washington twenty days Mime ittt it condition bordering upon demoralization; and, added to these, new recruits who had never before faced fire. This was the material which achieved inch great deeds last week—which drove back superior numbers of rebel veterans, and vanquished tliCan on three fields. We have more confidence in our army now than ever. Good leadership, active-movements, and fighting op ,the offensive, are all that It now needs, or ever needed, for victory.— N.. Y. Times. .A.ROTHZI WAITTIO TO TILATZLEBB.—PeopIe in travelling take little heed to their pockets. Two thieves take seats in a railroad train ; enter into conversation loud enough to be heard all through the car. Ono thief person stem a "'returned prisoner," or a wounded °Seer, and at once all ears are intent in list ening to his narrative. While this Is going on a confederate plies his art in picking the pockets of the people whose attention is ab sorbed in another direction. Coining from Washington to Philadelphia on Tuesday night, Judge Black, ex-Unites) States Attor ney General, was robbed of $l,OOO. The haul lathe largest made from a single pocket in a long period. He cannot tell at what point he lost the money.. It is morally certain, how ever, that having secured his booty, the thief got off the train at the neat station. Havre de•Grace Is the headquarters of the railroad ° alerts. Bette - ion there and' Wilmington they Mention every train. WATEII•PROOI CLOTII is produced by the simple process of passing the cloth through a hot solution or glue and alum. A weak solution; of glue is made, and while it is hot, two ounces of alum to the gallon is added and dissolved. Cloth may then' be wrung through the solution and dried, when it cannot be. wet through by rain, which-trickles off without being absorbed. Finer woolen goods may be sponged with the hot solution, fast on the inside, and then in the - direction, of the nap, upon the outside.' It must be thoroughly dried, first in the air, and then in a hot room. A small (inanity of soap added te the solution makes the cloth much softer. Cloth made water-proof in' this way will resist the effects of water,, even if it is somewhat .warm, but boiling removes the preparation. Tux ATM/LOC.—OM' army is always vie torieus when it is the attacking party. . The battles of Gen. McClellan last week are the first fora long time in which we have as sumed the offensive. In the battles on the Peninsula we were always on the defensive; In Gen. Pope's battles in Virginia, he was on the defensive. • In the West, in the bat tip at . Shiloh, and in other instances of ill success or dubious success, we were on the defensive; whilst at , aortelson and other glorious fields, wewere the attacking party.
