It is next to impossible toltear One General speak welt of another. We have much too many Generals out of very common men. The cant that they are politician, amounts to nothing. I believe the .best Generals we now have in our army were the .most successful politicians in times of peace. West• Point certainly has not effected much thusiki, unless it is to spawn traitors. The steamer sailed at. 6 o'clock last even ing. The volunteers were completely uni- I formed and equipped, and armed with En field rifles. • It. is an interesting fact in connection with the regiment, that among the privates' ranks is Elias Howe, Jr., the well-known, inventor of the sewing-machhie needle, whose patent yields the princely income of a .quarter of a million dollars, annually: Mr. Howe is a citizen of Bridge port, Conn., and at a war meeting held in that town a few weeks since, subscribed two thousand_ dollars to the "fund for' raising vein& tetra, at' the same time enrolling his name as - a voltinteer. Mere recently he presided at a war meeting in the Eleventh ward of Brooklyn, where his city - residence is situ -cited, and enlyscribed a thousand dollars to the war fund. In his address he reiterated his intention of entering the ranks, and asked his Auditors to join him inthe bat- Ale-field. Yesterday heappeared with his regiment in tin nniform of a private, but received permission to remain for the pe riod of a day' or two to settle up his busi ness.
