Our Troops Fighting Against Great Oddi, as usual. On Tut Field, Cedaa Ecu, Sotrru or Culpcppxb, 1 ' " Baturdsy, August 9,1362. j This has been an eventful da; with the army of Virginia. It had been known einoe yester day morning that the rebels were in foroe im mediately in our front. They had been driv ing back Gen. Bayard’s Cavalry for several hours before the force under Gen. Crawford was sent forward to give thorn battle; and ho sooner had we arrived here than our outposts were fired upon by their pickets. Skirmish ing was'kept up all the forenoon, and the en emy held oexnpletely in check; bnt it was not until 3 o'clock p. m. that < the fight assumed the dignity of a battle. At that hour, the rebels opened their artillery upon Gen. Craw ford from the wood to the right of the road about one mile. This was done to ascertain theposition of oar batteries, and it possible bring oat oar forcer Gen.C. ordered Knapp’s Pennsylvania Battery to reply, and at tbo second sholl the enemy’s guns were silenoed. Their longline of cavalry had moved around a frlgh hill on our left; towards the Rapidaa Fora. At once a strong foroe of cav alry was thrown in that direction, and. loon after the enemy, finding he pould do nothing, countermarched his cavalry to our right. Thus matters stood, the largo force of the enemy having been held in cheek by Gen. Crawford's singlebrigade ofl&fantry, artillery and cavalry; The cannonading con tinued os both [aides. until 4 p. m., when Gon. Bankrappearci ’ upon the field with Gen. . Augur’s Division and the remainder of Gen. Williams* Division. Qen. Crawford’s foroe, consisting of the Twenty-eighth Now York, Col. Donnelly; Forty-sixth Pennsylvania, Col.Knlpe; Tenth Maine, Col. Bealo, and, Fifth Connecticut, Col. Chapman, with a bat tery of the Fourth United Btates Artillery, under Lieut. Muhlenburgb; Roomer's New York battery and Knapp’s Pennsylvania Battery were now thrown to the right, with the exception of the artillery, for the purpose of making a movement upon the eniemy s gunk the most important movement of tho day. Tho Tenth Maine was then moved for ward to the support of the centre, and tho re mainder of the-brigade formed, as stated, on the right, with the addition of.the -Third Wisconsin, and an effort was mado to drive the enemy away from their cover in tho woods. During all this time tho firing on both sides Was terrific, and the men were falling by the seore. The line advanced steadily, with tho exception of the Third Wisconsin, under a. Bt n{ galling.fire, and drove the rebels back. The Wisconsin Regiment fled at the first fire, and it was with gTeat difficulty and ut great personaVrisk, ihat tho General succeeded in gettiog them' into lino again. They had hardly returned to their position, however, before they broke and ran again—in fact, proved worse than useless. The remainder of the infantry charged upon the enemy’s bat teries, severalof which could not be seen un til they entered the wood, whore they came snddenly upon a Urge infantry force that had Uin concealed from the commencement of the fight. This force opened firo upon our men ; with frightful effect, The slaughter at this point was very great. More than one half tbo men of tho Twenty-eighth Now /V ork were killed and wounded. Col. Donnelly, commanding,’ was mortally wounded; the Lieutenant Colonel, Brown, and tho Major are both wounded, and there is not a Captain of a company left to the regiment. The Tenth Maine lost about one hundred and fifty in killed and wounded; the Fifth Connecticut suffered aioUprly> besides losing Col. Chap man, who was taken prisoner. The Forty sixth Pennsylvania has hardly enough men left to form a' full company. CoL Kmpe was wounded in the head and in the arm, but not fatally ; Lieut. Colonel Selfridge waa slightly Injured, and the Major was shot through bis the ponfasion of the hoar it Is Im possible to get particulars accurately. Geary’s and Gordon’* forces have all suffered. Gen. Geary is slightly wounded, and a few minutes ago Geh. Banks received an injury from a cavalryman, who ran violently against him while be was about to mount bis horse. Gen. Crawford and Jtaff were near being taken prisone-s twiee during tho fight. On both occasions they were examining different points, with a view t-» a change of position, when they came upon the rebel pickets. For tunately they all escaped unhurt. While I am writing the wounded are being carried to the roar, for although the firing on both tides stopped at 9 p. m , it is expected that the fight will be renewed in the morning with largely augmented forces on both aides. Our cavalry force at Madison Court House, under Gen. Beaufort, has been driven out, and from every point we receive intimations that the robots have determined to offer ns an ob stinate and.htoody resistanee. Wbat the re bel loss ha*been, to dey, wo cannot ascer tain. I will learn and send farther accounts as soon as possible. TKBBIS Bluet Begrets. General Burnside’s Division. .A correspondent of the Boston .Tanrtvtl with Qen. Their baggage and tent equipage-are reduced to the smallest amount consistent;.and an order-to tbis effect, I un derstand, Is Issued or about to be, for the ben efit of this corps. Bome of the knapsacks which our men are expected to carry on their backs are of tho most prodigious weight _tbe fault of the men as well as the officers, for they ought not to allow them to be filled with trash ploked up here and there. Some of the knapsacks, on examination yesterday, were found to weigh as muoh a* U has been the rule to allow officers to takoTor baggage. This weight, on the back, a full haversack, forty rounds of cartridges and equipments, make a pretty heavy weight for a man to toat ah jut under a sweltering sun. , The order U, X believe, to dispense with the knipiaokj altogether, allowing only a robber blanket, and either an overcoat or a woolen blanket, with a change of underclothing for the privates, while eaeh officer h toboeJlowed thirty pounds baggago, instead ofabciutelghty, as heratofore. This will be a great improve ment io long as warm weathor lasts, and un doubtedly will be agreeable to all interested.' Heretofore officers have been expected tobave a full dress uniform, so that they could make a fine! appearance on dress parade, If real service is. expeoted of officers and men, why ia not an undress uniform, that -will do for hard use, better than necessitating the trans*' portation of more than doable what is actu ally necessary? , -•- vV' 1 ‘ Among the people whom the new order, of arrangements affects is a wealthy old planter, Dr. Wallace, who Uses not far from where some of our troops aro encamped. Mr. Jefferson Davis has adopted the well-known role of the most violent of the French, revolutionists: Vavdacc t toujour* taudace —audacity upon audacity. We referred an Saturday to his cool effron tery in denouncing assassination against Gen. Pope for merely obeying the orders of his government. But. he now adds the most heinous perfidy to his other atrocities. Having received his own officers. Generals Buokner, Tilghman, Makall, Pettigrew and Gaunt, as well as Commodore Barron and a host of captains, under an agreement for an equitable exchange of prisoners, he now refuses to return our officers!/ A more dis graceful and fiendish breach of faith was never committed by a crew of savage islanders, ora tribe of Choctaws or Black feet. “ It is well known that oar government has.ril along been averse to a formal ex change of prisoners, becauso the negotia tions thereto might imply a recognition of the rebel authorities as a legitimate power. It was willing to make informal surren ders of. the insurgents -in its possession for an equal number of loyal captives, and many exchanges have been made on that basis/ But the rebels have steadily refused to givo our officers, and for more than a year have retained such.noble and gallant spirits/as Colonel Corcoran and Colonel Wilcof in.th® .vilest of prisons. At length, to recover these valuable men and to. show, the clemency and- justness of its disposi tion, it.consented to ® regularexchange, which was negotiated byGeneralsDlx and Lee for the respective sides. Three, thou* i sand rebels, including air.their conspic uous officers, were accordingly sent up from i Fortress Monroe the bther day,*to secure the release of an equal number of officers and men. Adjutant-General Thomas, who was entrusted with the exchange, with a confidence in the eincerity of the rebels which requires explanation, dispatched his company at once towards Richmond, where the rebel officers now are, but he received; in return loyal privates only ahd'jno offi cers. The rebel authorities, with a cool ness that has no parallel iir the annals of crime, informed . him ' that for . the j present they had concluded to'del&in the j officers. No reasons have been'given for this breach of faith, beyond the imperious will of tho heartless and unprincipled in surrectionary government. - ' ' This conduct, however, is of a piece with ‘ the- entire management of those reckless and desperate traitors. They have not scrupled about hanging inoffensive Union men on the nearest tree; they have driven out of their homes innocent wqmen and children, because their husbands and fath ers were loyal; they have burbed their slaves alive for merely suspected offences; | they Have bayoneted our wounded and dy ing on tho battle field; they have shot our poor fellows, almost scalded to death by an accidental explosion of steam, and while they were struggling with the waters; and they, have systematically striven to turn' the whole process of the war into a series of murderous guerrillaftttacks, like those of' Quantrell in Missouri and of Morgan in Kentucky; and why, then, should we ex pect that they would manifest bo simple a J virtue as fidelity to their’ engagements? i General Thomas must have been ss credit lous as any old woman to take their prom- | iso of honest dealing. He should have seen and connled officer forofficer and man for man before he gave up his prisoners. He has before been accused; by rumor at least, of over-partiality and frith towards tho rebels, and this solemn cheat we trust will open his eyes. ’ - The fates of Colonelr Corcoran and Wil cox,-to say nothing of others less distin guished, have been indeed painful anddis tressing. More than once,.after having Buffered for months the deprivations, the tedium, the horrors and the insults of im prisonment, separated from- all friends and in the midst of insolent and jeering’ene mies, they have been on the eve of return ing to their homes and- friends* and have been disappointed. . Their houses have been got ready, their wives and little ones havo cried for joy, ibeir neighbors have brought forth the big guns to sound a wel come reception, and yet. they have not come. The infernal malice of the„ rebels has broken the cup of gladness just as it has been presented to their lips. In this city every loyal heart has been‘expecting with impatience the arrival of our noble Irish chief, and this day we hoped to see his manly face once more; but alas, Corco ran is still in‘Richmond. Do the rebels suppose that we of North, and particularly that the multitude of loyal Irishmen, -who cherish Corcoran as the apple of their eye, will forget these wanton, these atrocious, these indescribable insults anj tyrannies? -iV.
