Protecting the Property of, Traitore
A letter from Nashville, of Junb 21st, come
plains roost bitterly, that the traitor General
Pillow's great plantation is carefully guarded
by our soldiers, and all intrusion prevented,
while it is cultivated by an overseer and a
largo number of nogroes, and the proceeds
doubtless sent to the traitor. Out, sick sol
diers are crowded into the hot city of Nash
ville, while his family mansion is kept for the
traitor to return to. Recently, a chaplain,
and another officer, whose salary would not sl- .
low them to be fleeced at the hotels, took posses
sion of an untenanted building, belonging to
. an absent traitor, but they were immediately
' ousted by orders from headquarters. At
Fredericksburg, and near Richmond, our sol-
diere are guarding rebel property from Intro-
Sion. R. J. Raymond, of the New York
Times, says there are Sternly houses untouched,
as good as the White Rouse, in its immediate
neighborhood, while our sick soldiers ere
sweltering in hot tents.
There is no subject of irritation so potent
as this one at this time. The public, mind is
chafing terribly under shit leniency to rebels,
and the Government ought to change this
policy, or give some good reason for it. The
people cannot understand it, and they are
impatient under it, while tuns of thousands of
families are called to mourn over the sickness
and deaths of sons, fathers and brothers sent to
fight this great rebellion.

OUR AIMY CORRESPONDENCE
From Gen. I.llcCellatn7o Army
FAIR Oana,Co., June 19, 1552.
The plot thickens ; the play goes on, and
the day is not far distant when thelast sot of
this groat national drama Of Rebellion vs.
Law and Order will be performed, and the
certain descend on a .once more united and
peaceful country, timid the plaudits of the
civilized world. Each day, though the army
of the Potomac is lying apparently Inactive;
the rehela are being whipped, worse—aye, ten
times worse—than if fighting. They know it,
too, and though anxious to have the battle
fought which is to decide their fate, are not
•
particular about attacking us. Their experi
ment on May 31st convinced them of the im
prudence of such a step. To compel us to at-
tack them, however, they are continually I
making extensive domonstratioes in our I
front, and skirmishing with the pickets. This,
however, creates no alarm,, owidg to the ex
traordinary strength of the guard. The pick
as a stationed not more than dozen
three
or
tour, and behind all, not more than five hun
dred yards, is the reterve-4-anillitire brigade.
Thus, you see, the pickets forM a force
the mina- of not I
less than six thousand men, equal to \
ber of men in Casey . ' division, the day of the
light.
Rumors are•in circulation, relative to the
reduction of Fort Darling, by the combined I
attacks of Gen. Ilurneide and the ganboats on
the James river. At the White House, the
report was that Burnside bad been ordered to
advance on the fort, and early yesterday
morning, heavy cannonading, beard In that
direction gave rise to the rumor that Fort
Darling was bombarded, whieh later in the
day, grew into a redaction of the place.
Yesterday the enemy made .somewhat somewhat of an
alarming demonstratiori in front of our left
wing. Skirmishers advanced on oar pickets,
supported by largo bodies of infantry, with
cavalry and artillery. • r pickete immedi
ately opened tire on th em and for a time the
firing was very sharp. As the enemy ap
proached within range, our battery of Napo
leons opened on them, and, in the language of
one of the pickets, " the • robs' soon ske
daddled." In the three Months' campaign
such an affair wou have been honored with
the name of a batt ld
le, but they are of to com
mon occurrence here that they excite very lit
tle attention, and the men go about their duty
as if a thousand relief (roilthe vicinity of
any ene b my.
Day efore yesterday a almoner from the
Sixth Alabama came into our lines with the
important infismation that Jackson was to be
reinforced froM. tho army .at Richmond, by
Weer. thousaud mom lila regiment was to
be one of the number, and he took thus op-
immunity of making his escape to our army.
The Pennsylvania: Reserves are here, en
camped on the other side of the Chickshomi
uy. They have not yet receivedcClellan orders,
and
but
were to be reviewed by Gen. M,
then receive their station. This coups is •
valuable acquisition. to the army of the Pen
insole. They have bed large experience n
• the art of war, and during the past year have
' been constantly in the must active service.
• They had some little experience in fighting,
• too, aims will, no doubt, prove themselves
worthy of the name, and anemia the honer of
Peonsylestuia eoldiers.
Some fears have been entertained of an at-

I I probably it will end as the rumors gene rally

The dead on the field at Fair Oaks have all

that I had noticed lying together, and making

would not do ; they must have an epitaph. A

IMPORTANT FROM TUB VIRGINIA . V MR
en Back to Strasburg
Fremon
Fremont, having found Mount Jackson in.
defensible against the superior force of Jack
son, has fallen back to Strasburg, thirty miles
further down the valley. This is the position
held by Banks, when he commenced his
famous retreat. A letter from 'Winchester,
June 20, says
Fremont has fallen back upon Strasburg,
in the neighborhood of which extensive
fortifications are being erected. Sigel is
about nine miles
si to the
rear
he is of Freortify
mont,
having chosen a tintion which f
ing. Shields has gone down toward Freder
ieksburg, and this afternoon, Banks, who ar
rived here yesterday evening, moved up the
valley, several miles hence.
You will perceive by this change that a
strong base for future operations has been es
tablished, which was essentially necessary.
Shields, properly belonging to McDowell's
division of the Army of theShenandoala, fully
two months ago was ordered from Newmarket
to Fredericksburg. The road was in a horri
ble condition, and rain fell most of the time—
s, that he was nearly 19 days in making the
march of 150 miles. Soon after the attack
upon Gen. Bankii, and his masterly retreat,
Gen. Shields was ordered to return again to
the Shenandoah Valley; and now, ere his men
have shad time to recover from their fatigue,
other orders arrive for him - to hasten to the
Luray Valley a second time. This weakening
of the fortes hereabout made it nedessary for
Gen. Fremont to fall book, and, with Sigel,
establish and fortify a base of eperations.
The Union troops now hold something less
one-third of the territory in this valley,
add
braced in Berkeley, Jefferson, Clark
Frederick counties. while the Confederates at
present occupy Warren, Shenandoah, Page,
Rockingham, Augusta, Rookbridge and Bete.
(curt counties. These counties., some of ,
which cover a lame area, compose the emote
est section of the Shenandoah Valley, and it
is my ILUDIUSSiOn that the Confederates will
be satisfied, should we let them alone for the
next month, until the crops are harvested._ In
this labor the farmers will need assistance,
owing to the scarcity of hands, but they
doubtless will receive it from Jackson.
Whatever may be the result at Richmond,
the Concede may come tumbling into this val
ley and attempt to drive out our forces,in
whieh, from their superiority of numbers, hey
may be successful. Nor is it impossible that
Jackson may attempt a flank movement and
come.in at our rear, in which event our sup
plies will be cut off, and we shall have to
change front and out our way through; but
whits We movement on the part ot the rebel
General is possible, it is highly improbable.
The Secesh foaling hero is still rampant, hut ' 1

whose profits amount to 100 or 150 per cent. on
the articles sold. Quite a large number of
stores'aee closed, the occupants having gone

The resident business men that remain here
keep their stores open, though they have but
little stock, and are unable to obtain any.

f r a few days the place was made quite pre

chuckled and grinned as our men operated
with shovels and hoes, and the pititens were
compelled to declare that they had never soon
the place look so clean.
It is definitely stated that the Confederates
at this lace end at the battle of Gross Bays

During the last three days the streets have

The regular hospital in the old hotel bu ilding,
near the railroad depot, was soon filled, and
, this afternoon it became necessary to make
places fur the wounded in some of the vacant

amputations of legs and arms
were made this evening by the surgeons here,
and all the attention possible was bestowed/
upon the poor auffining soldiers. In one of
the stores on Main street were at least twenty
fine fellows lying upon a quitter blanketupon
the floor, with their knapsacks for a pillow.
Two nurses were waiting upon them, washing
land dressing their wounds, and whispering?
their ear words of consolation. These women
were assiddoue in their attentions and doing
all in their power to alleviate the pain
poor fellows were enduring. May God bless
them in their labor of love. As soon as they
are able to stand further fatigue, the men will
be sent home.

One of the lea ders of the °Jesse" Scouts,
who has iros arrived from the advance, states
that marching orders have been issued by
Fremont for a still further retrograde move
ment. Be' will either establish himself at
Middletown or fall back entirely to Winches
ter. Should he endeavor to fortify the former
point, he will be obliged to throw a heavy
forte to hold the Front Royal road at a point
parallel to Isis position, while by occupying
Winchester he holds the key to both trolleys.
It is confidently believed that Jackson is at
Luray. Winchester; withihe forte that Fre
moot has at hand, can be made impregnable,

unless the enemy has siege guns withi W
to fire the city. , /
