We are indebted to the Chicago Tribune for the following graphic account of the Into exciting events - on White river,. Arkansas: On the 13th The gunboats Mound City,' St_,Loins, and I.'exington, left Memphis for the mouth of White river. On the morning of the 14th Col; Fitch, with the capnired transports, the National steamers Jacob Musselmah and White Cloud, with stores and provieions, followed convoyed by the Conestoga. On the morning of the 16th the latter joined the gunboat fleet, and to- Keller they steamed up White river until 6 o clock in the evening, when they came near the little town of St. Charles, situated upon a high bluff near ,a hundred miles from the mouth of the river. It was known that this point Was fortified. Just below this point the fleet canto to anchor. Col. Fitch sent out a company of scouts on each side of the river to reconnoitre. A tug had gone up ahead on some errand. Presently the report of the boat howitzer was beard, followed by several guns flied in quick succession, and soon the tug returned, say ing she had been fired upon fromboth sides of the river. Previous to leaving the local , ity the tug had opened upon the enemy with her howitzer and driven from. the river bank the enemy's pickets. Col. Fitch then ordered his men back upon the boat and waited till the Morning of the 1711. About 6 o'clock the Mound City, the flag ship, the Mnsselman and New National with the troops, then the, St. Louis, Lexington and Conestoga ran up until they came within sight of the bluffs in the bend, half a mile ahead, and the Mound City ' opened fire. The troops were landed and the other gun boats passed on Slowly' up the river until within range of the batteries when they petired in a destructive shower upon the rebels, to which they made no reply. In the meantime Col. Fitch had landed his troops, about 600' men, formed them into line and started them forward on the dou ble-quick, intending to attack the fort in the rear. Soon in that direcgon were heard the volleys of ,t litsketry, sharp'end continuous, indicating at warm work was in progress. , Presently Col. Fitch, who led his regi 'ment in person,, sent word to the gunboats that the enemy's pickets were driven in, and advised an advance to engage the bat teries at short range. The steamer Mussel man was ordered to advance to the bend, ,but the shot and shell commenced to fall thickly around her, and she retired in obe dience to CoL Fitdh's, request. The, gun boats advanced a short distancey, when a battery stationed on the blitff above them, on the south bank of the river, opened fire. It was afterwards ascertained that this bat tery consisted of four small guns—two brass six-pounders and two rifled Parrotts. The intention of 'a partuf the rebels was to create the impression that this was the strength of the 'whole rebel fortifications, as though within easy range the renraining guns maintaining obdurate silence. The gunboats advanced steadily up the stream until they came- to the bend of the river opposite the middle of the bluff, rhere the enemy had that morning sunk thieetrans ports and a gunboist,.in the expectation of obstructing the passage of our fleet. While sinking one of the transports, it had floated with the current sous' to leave just space enough for the guribotits to pass, if neces sary, before reauVing the obstructions. While advancing slowly, the rebels opened , a destructive fire from two rifled 42-pound ers on the fleet, to which the four gunboats replied vigoiettsly for a half hour. It was at this mp'ment that the great catastrophe occurred./ An nalucky shot from one of the heavy gunaon the bill came plunging down and struck the Mound City on the larboard quarter, forward ahead of the iron plates, and cut its way through the heavy timber as if it was an inch board, add-struck the Steam drum, passed through it and the heater, and brought up in the pantry, where its progress was stayed. Then followed a scene which beggars de scription. The'. decks were crowded with nearly 200 men, and as the hot scalding steam was thrOwn with tremendous force between the deeks a terribleory of 'agony arose, which, spy informant says, will ring in his ears to all eternity. Out ef 180 men, 25 are all that escaped injury. Every officer but one was scalded or killed out right. lie was en the upper deck, and out of reach of the steam. He was first mas ter C. Dominy, of Peoria. CapL silty was in the pilot house, and was badly scrilded about the face, hands and feets, but is expected to recover. Sev eral jumped overboard, and the :yawls of the other gunboats went quickly to their assistance. At this juncture CoL Fry, the inhuman devil: incarnate commanding the rebel fortifications, ordered his sharpshoot ers to pick off ;the poor sailors swiming in the water, and , i for sometime kept firing at them with his large guns. A shot passed through theSmestoga's launch, but fortu nately killed no ono. hinny of our men were .killed in, the water, and several were drowned- Col. Fry is said to be an ex-lieutenant of the Federal Navy. By this time firing had ceased, and the 4xington towed the disabled Mound City into the bend.• The tug came to the trans ports for Surgeons and assistance for the scalded. The Sufferers were all stripped, the skin coming off in large flakes with their clothing, - and all turned to render the assistance so, iniperatively demanded. One of the men, who was dying on the gun deck, by some means' caught hold of the rope by which the cap on the guns ex ploded, and in.the extremity of his - agony discharged the larboard bow gun a very large one, and the shot passed through the engine of , the New National, forward of the wheel, cutting off; a steam pipe of the larboard engine, and severely scalding the engineer. . At tide time news came friim Col. Fitch that he had taken tho, fort; also that Col. Fry, the rebel' commandant, was badly wounded in the: shoulder. . Col. Fitch did not loose a man of hiacom mand. • The steamer iduiselman WAR ordered to take the wounded to Memphis, under con voy of tbo Coneatogi. About sun. down all the living were taken aboard, and the steamer started on the 18tb, about day light. The steamer reached thy:Jacinth of White river diming ',the night! Twenty died; among them 84 master John 11, Kinste,-Jr.,, of Chicago; five men died on the Conestoga; among them N. C. Gunn, the purser, and Surgeon Joiato., *as not ex pected to' recover. , At twelve ' o'clock " m. on the, 18th, the Steamers stopped above hiandsNos. 67 and 68, and buried their dead, twentyoine from the Bluaselman, and four frorithe Conesto- MIMI Tlie;y weseltatits4 IRA single 'grave; „view A nr Earirsi p . /or squire well; with as inscitption ' head of each.vounded hillock, denoting the SHAW'S SICKLES; name and rank; of - the - deceased.- - Their - 1)odie8 can he easily recovered r if desired. .The Generarl. It: was Hindman whq passed the no quitilei oider„ at Little Rock - , and who had the" spirited discussion thereon with Col. J. R. Curtis, then at Batesville. Information reached here at eight o'clock last evening, by the Union, now•Lancaater No. 3, that it was feared Col. Fitch, with his 300 men; would not be able to hold his position at St. Charles, as a large bady of rebels were in the vicinity and preparing to attack him. Gen. Curtis is supposed to be at Batesville. . The Mortar Fleet 'Gone to Vicksburg. Nax OaieAna, June 10, 1062. • While the vessels of the mortar fleet Were making arrangements for a long delay the pretty harbor of Pensacola, the Miami came steaming into the bay at top Speed, with an order to the bomb flotilla; from Commodore Farragut, to proceed without delay to Vieks• burg. The entire flotilla at once made sail, June sth, and stood for Pass a POutre. Ar riving at the pass, the eteameri of the flotilla took the sailing vessels in tow. Nearly alt the schooners have arrived at this poirit, and are at anchor about a mile below. the city, at the western side of the river. The Pensacola and Mississippi are lying before the city. The New London is at anchor in Lake Pon ohartraint guarding the approaches on that side. It is said that to-morrow the flotilla will get underway, and• that the passage to Vickabur; will occupy not less than ten days. The evidences on the river below New Or leans of returning commercial activity are very slight. The river boat Empire Parish seemed•to be well-loaded on her way up the river from Fort Jackson. The French shin Harriet Rain, and the Cardenas, a fine little steamer, whose crew lOoked like Spaniardi, were at anchor near the fort. The United States mail steamer Roanoke was on her way from New York, with passengers and a valu able cargo. The bark J. P. Wetherell, of Thomasson, Maine, was at anchor at one of the sugar plantations. Besides two or three other, vessels which might have been commer cially inclined, these vessels were all the ship ping that was seen in a passage up the river of two days and a half. Secession spies. A letterTrom Washington says: A friend who was at.Fredericksburg yes terday tells me all was perfectly quiet there. He was informed that if he desired to go to Richmond the road was open. This was in reply to inquiries of his respecting a brother who is a resident of a Southern city. Ile was mistaken for a secession resi dent of Washington, and was told that communication between Fredericksburg and Richmond was constantly kept up. The rebel residents are sure of final victory. The rebel leaders continue to circulate their plausible falsehoods in such a manner that their deluded followers are constantly en couraged to believe in the ultimate triumph of their anise. At Aquia Creek my friend found a harbor-master, who, though put there by the government, is evidently not loyal man., He declared that he did not be lieve the rebellion could ever be put down. He would hang abolitionists as soon at rebels. He said ho was in the habit of riding on Sunday'S round among the Vir ginia farmers, and be was convinced the Southern people could never be made to live under the same government with the North. "I should call you a secessionist, if you were in Washingion," said my friend; but The harbor-master stoutly denied the truth of the charge. 'He was only the next door to a secessionist—a pro-slavery Dem ocrat MCDOWELL AND EII3 ARMI.—The Wash ington correspondent of the New York Evening Post says: McDowell's troops have not yet reached Fredericksburg, on their way from Front Royal and Manassas Junction. Where they now are, or where they are going, it would be improper to state. PUBLIC JUOTICES . -- "LECTURE AT THE IRON CITY COLLEGE, corner of Penn And St. Oloir sta.
