The editor of the Pittsburgh - Port is in despair. His wailinge would be tonohlng, were they not so Much like the fiowlings of 'the loot, who mix their regrets with bias peados and falsehoods. The power of rattail : opinions, growing, advancing, - the city and in the country, in Congress • twain thearmy, and like a vast. avalanche, sostir to sweep to everlasting destruc tion the remains of the pro-slavery Demon racy,.has drawn oat the following ' wailing confession from the editor: . . These radical opinions are controlling • the newspaper • literature of the North— Greeley Miner (talking through his journal to at least half a million of readers every week—they have control of the majorities of both Houses of Congress, which majori ties are in concert; with the Tribune, ap parently, to prevent a re-union of the States. True, we have in both branches of Congress a glorious little band of patriotic, conservative Men, who are gallantly dash ing back the Waved of fanaticism, Cut they an very fem. nark the malignity, 'how - ever, -which pursues these few. These ex tremists, and we believe disunionist; are sustained lays very large portion of the Republican press of the country. Their vilest note are pronounced those of patriots, end those who differ from them are hunted down with the cry of "sympathy with the .rebel" This class of men are a thousand times more dangerotis totho reconstruction of the. It is true, and we are glad of it, that Greeley - talks to half a million of readers a week, and they are among the mat intelligent, able, and thinking minds of the country. It Is also true, that the Radicals, as the Post calls them., , --but in other words, the sincere honest Re publicans--control the majority in both Houses of Congress. But it is not true, and the editor knows it is „ . not, that they are apparently' endeavoring to prevent a re-union of the States. He says he rises here to , reproach this Senate for the course they may ace fit to take ' upon this door. Will his reproaches reach very far? How long has ha been here, and where did he come from, and what account had we of him before he came,' that he is to into the Senate with authority' and presump tion to be its guardian ? • • : • • When a man gets up here .and under takes to lecture this body upon their duty, and to scold them for not doing what ho thinks right, he ought to come with some authority, as a.gentleman of talent, who has acquired some right to 'lecture his fel low-men. I do not deny that a man has a righb to take a seat on this floor, and--if he sees fit to do It—become the. more ad vocate, the Watch-dog for traitors in the field. He may argue for them; he may scold for them, hemay vote for .them, and I shall not undertake to correct hie] or to' lecture him for so doing; but, Sir let not such a one rise here and criticise my course, and much less get up and re-' preach, as ho has, the Senate of the Uni ted States, and put on airs as though .a gentleman from the wilds of Pennsylvania should come into the Senate 'of the United States, and in the 'middle of his first ses sion, reproach the Senate for the course they bad taken. I wonder that the Senate do not tremble under such reproaches What ariument, what vote has be given, what position has he occupied on any ques tion that has arisen here between traitors and the attempt to pnbish them, except to act as their advocate in every case and on - all occasions? He base right to do it. I do not criticisehim; but let not such a one rise here to be overseer and guardian of the Senate: This kind of declamation weighs as nothing. It is very easy for a Senator to talk about ; whot he has read in Don cluixote and apply it to the argument of constitu tional questions, and' quote that as an au thority on the Constitution. The authority is like the advocate himself. One is about as good as the other. Sir, who authorized the Senator to speak authoritatively upon the Constitution? What right has !he to do so?_ What reputation had he when he came from home to - justify It Ido not know but that ho may. be a great expounder of the Constitution. I can only say I never happened LP hear of it: It is very eas y to talk from hour to hour and from day to day about gentlemen's duty to observe the Con stitution. I have already remarked that that is unnecessary. Every Senator; no doubt, expects to folltiveltis convictions and to do his duty according to the Conatittition: • • •. AA to the Senatoi from Pennsylvania, you cannot get a negro soy= where that he will touch, even across a teni acre lot.
