We were astounded at the large numbers of women and children that promenaded the severalstreets., having their termination on Canal street. Of course, there was nothing of a business nn- tare thought of; the chief attraction was in and about the City Hall. • The proceedingi of the City Council will be found elsewhere: A number of, the federal vessels proceeded the river on Skturday_ evening, but re turned yesterday, forenocrn. The flags of the different. consulates, or the representatives of • European govern ments, are all displayed from their respec tive offices excepting in two or three in stances. The Consulate of Bremen has no flag, and two or three other nations have no representatives here. Several private citizens, foreign subjects, have hoisted' their country's emblem over their residences. The destruction of property has been im mense, much more tio than necessary. True, all the cotton wan expected to have been burnt, but why the sugar and:molasses on the levee was - sierificed in the: manner it was, that is, carried off by pilferers and the rabble, we cannot say. A part of, a cargo of provisions, just landed from Bed river, was also stolen. -If the agrarians had made an equal division, it might have been of more benefit, but some parties, not satisfied with baskets and bags of sugar, railed away hogsheads, others barrels of sugat-J in fact; never was such a scene of pilfering heard orbefore, nor such scenes as occurred. last Friday in this , heretofore peaceable city. Measures, it will be observed, have been taken by the authorities to put a stop to these disgraceful doings. CONDEMNATION Oi l THE" DESTRUCTION OT PROPERTY WHEN TUE REBEL TROOPS EVAC UATED. [From the Algiers Newsboy, April 28 ] There was much loss and destruction of property on Thursday night and Friday, which was utterly unnecessary and un called for. Our dry docks, which the whole federal navy could not carry away,- were sunk, most of them beyond the hope of re ' covery. A - warehouse below the depot, lately put ro - use by Mr. Thayer, was_bnirnt on yesterday morning, because of the pre sence of a little cotton therein, -which be longed to a Spanish house; but besides this there were two - hundred hogsheads of sugar the property of a widow lady in Attakapos. Two of the bargee of the Opeleusas Rail road were also burned. None of these sacrifices were necessary. The cotton be longed to-neutral foreigners, and was safe from capture. It was put up in half bales, as is usual with cotton intended for Mexi can transportation. There could have been no apparent reason for its destruction. Not only this, but Mr. Thayer asked for --time to roll it out, but this was denied him.- • We hope to hear of no more such folly. TIIS RDBILLVTILAIL DOWN TOE UNION /LAO.
