The repeal of the exclusion will ,mark the emancipation of the public mind _from those petty meannesses to which it was subjected under the rule of Slavery. Last but not least in-these indications is the emancipation, by military authority, of slaves, belonging to rebels, who have come -.within our lines.. Gen. Of events that are almost sure to hap pen, bearing in' the same direction, we may mention the Confiscation bill, the bill to prohibit the inter-state Slaie trade, the hat to prohibit Slavery in all our national territories; and the emancipation move= mints in the:Border States. We add to the account of the evacuation of Yorktown already before our readers, the following additional particulars by.an eye-witness, which we copy from the tele graphic correspondence of the New York papers of Monday etre-ning: ~ Yorktown 'was evacuated entirely by the rebels at 2j o'clock on the morning of the 4th. During all the preceding day and night, they kept up n heavy firing on our batteries all along our line, to cover their retreat. Our pickets pressed their posi tion on the morning of the 4th, and entered their abandoned intrenchments. We captured a rebel gunner, in the act of firing this piece. Ile said 1:42, was the last inhabitant of Yorktown. Ile had been firing the gun all night. ° ° ° Is the house of Mrs. Nelson, where Gen. Magruder had slept the night Ware the evacuation, I found several open letters lying unfolded on the table Two were ad dressed to' Gen. McClellan, one to "the first Yankee who comes," and ono to "Abe Lin coln." The following are the contents of one addressed to Gen. McClellan: General Mead:an : You will be surprised to hear of our departure at this stage of the game, leaving lyou in possession of this worthless town; but the fact is, McClellan, we have otheri engagements to attend to, and can't wait any longer. Our boys are getting sick of this damned place, and the hospital likewiiie, so good bye for a little while. ' Adjutant TEnur, C. S. A. M. Tints were left standing, with bedding and articles of\ luxury in them. On the canvas and sides of the huts were carica tures of the Yankee soldiers. Many of the tents were cut in different places. Four large trucks forarrying heavy guns stood near the - dock, with an immense quantity of lumber. In the inside retrenchments were wooden guns projecting from the embrasures. Fort Magruder, which we built strong works to reduce, was found to be a weak place. Its inside works were sand bags piled up, with logs'of wood painted black on the end. What sanguine rebels I to think that they could play the winning game with quaker gum!, a second time. Surely once was enough—and Manassas could not be so soon forgotten! ' Tho correspondent con tinues : On the parapets north-east of Yorktown six guns were left. On the south side two smoothbores were found spiked. Portions of Yorktown were undermined. The mag tiaine doors are forbidden to be opened, for fear of explosions. Torpedoes and sheik with a fuse fastened to small wires, lie in the roads, redoubts, &e. The Fifth regiment New York (Duryee's Zouaves) had fivemen killed and several wounded by the explosion of a tor pedo. The Thirty-eighth New York Volun teers, Colonel Hobart Ward, had two men killed and four wounded by the bursting of a prepared shell. His regiment were among the fait to enter the rebel works. The Fortieth New York Volunteers lost one man killed and two woundei, The Seven tieth Regiment New York olunteers lost two men killed. .other casualties have.oc ourred, but .I cannot send you partieulkrs at present. As soon as the evacuation of Yorktown became known in the camps, the bands of the different regiments commenced playing, amidst cheering of the soldiers. The following order was sent to divisions and brigades, at seven from General McClellan : •'Commandants of regiments will prepare to march, with two days' ration; with the utmost dispatch. Leave not to return." At about 8 a. re. the troops began to march; the First regular cavalry and four batteries of artillery leading. Tents were struck, knapsaks strapped, and, within an hour after the order was given, tho troops were marching beyond Yorktown. The gunboats ascended the river to Cl' off the retreat of the enemy. They will go • to West Point. Ten thousand nf the rebels were sent, from Winne's -Mills to reinforce an army sent from Richmond to oppose MoDowellis advance, last Thursday week. A number of guns, some of them spiked, were left at Gloucester Point, but the pre cise number I am unable to state. The fortifications at Gloucester consisted only of outside earthworks, and could easily have been taken. The main body of the, rebels aro encamped three miles from Wil liamsburg, near the James river. On the night of.the Bd , terrific firing was kept up until 12 o'clock within • the rebel works. One' of a our Generals of the trenches reported that it was volleys • of Musketry and heavy cannonading against oar lines, whiCiiimoved a mistale. One of the rebel magazines bad burst, and, the fire scattered to' where a large number„bf boxes filled with cartridges were piled. up. As eachbox caught the fire, the report was similar to a regiment discharging a volley. Nineteen rebels were killed and over sixty wounded. The works at Yorktown ere nothing like no formidable as we had been led to believe. The total force of the rebels,. according to reports found at the headquarter' of Gen, oral Magruder, was less than seventy thou sand: No great battle is expected at Wil liamsburg, as the rebel troops, particu— larly-those under Magruder, have mutinied on several occasions within two weeks. Five thousand of his men threatened to lay down their arms unless they received food and clothing. Three rebel lieutenants, two sergeant'' and twenty men, were captured the otherside of Yorktown and brought in. 'Race the third over seventy deserters have coin. in, and they report' their army as thoroughly disheartened and . demoralized. The rebel council of war was held int Mrs. Nelson's houso at Yorktown, - on Tues day, and Wednesday last. Jeff. Davis and two members of his cabinet, Generals Lee, Magruder, and nine other Generals were fresent. The debates were warm and ex citing; but finally. it was resSPreil, to evac uate; Baggage beloneAng: to officers arid pre served stores belonging to the medionl de, .partment hove been captured.
