It will be remembered that, - some Lye years ago; the County Cormier Dorchester, in Mary land, condemned the Rev. Samuel Green, a colored local Methodist Episcopal preacher of irreproachable eharicter,.to tan years' im prisonment in the Penitentiary, for "having in hie possession 'Uncle Tom's Cabin.' " This was done tinder a law then recently passed, . . and still disgracing our statute book, to sup reed - whtft are called "incendiary public& dons," and to prevent their circulation amongst : the slaves. This condemnation deeply shocked the public conscience at the time, notwithstanding it had been-drugged almost to death by the virus of pro-slavery, and the subsequent execution of the barbarous antiveuel sentence upon this helpless black man has never set well upon the public mind. A Methodist Episcopal Conference, some two or more years ago, sitting on the Eastern Shore, interposed in behalf of-Mr. Green, with great earnestness of purpose, for his pardon; but, to the astonishment of friend and fee, the otherwise kind-hearted Governor Hicks positively tensed tn grant the prayer of.'the petitioners, and declared that Green should never go out of priSbn, so long as he was Gov ernor: andle kept hii word. But this victim of pro-slaverj vengeance was not forgotten. Its was employed in the lighter but responsi ble dutiei about the Nyarden's, office, and din charged-them so well as to receive the con stant approbation of that officer. ' TWo gentlemen of the ffociety of Friends in this' city - never forgot him. The prisoner filled a, large place to their hearts. Last week, at their instance in part, but rather moved thereto by his own starling qualities of justice and mercy, Governor Bradford granted Mr. Green a pardon, and released him from his unjust captivity, on condition of his expa triation,.which was required by the County Court of Dorcheiter and the States Attorney, and which was readily conceded by the pris oner, because. he had determined to remove to Canada just previous to his arrest and con demnation, having — paid that country a visit with a view to emigration , thither. He is in his sixty-second year, and his wife in her sixtieth. His property, which was consider abli, lias taken wings and fled; and he is now I penniless, but he will find friends who will help him on his way..--Batsiniore Cor. of N. . r. Eir. Post. .
