The arrival of the mails Of the'Neva I Scotian places us in possessio n of the de tails of the affaie--one of the most appal cataitrophes \(that the annals of tteci dent record, invoking the loss of probably two hundred or mere. • The accident occurred on the 16th of Jan uary, at ten o'cloOk in the morning. The Neswcastle Chronicle says : "Had it taken place a little later in the day its effects would hare, been compara tively trifling, for the night shift being in process of coming to bank, the pit in a short time would have been deserted. Out of the two hundred, hoWever, whose hours of labor had expired,'ozily sixteen had left the shaft, and eight more Were at the moment being drawn to bank in the cage by means of the winding machine. When about half way up, the beam of the engine snapped at the axle, and the outer half—a mass of iron upwards of twenty. tons in 'weight—fell, with the .velticity of a whirl wind and en emphasis which, defies' calculation, sheer down the shaft. The result baffles descrip tion, while the- horrors which presented themselves after the duet had subsided are almost beyond conception. The falling mass appears to have first struck the brat tine, which it 'smashed and scattered like chariu its downward career. The iron cage in which the men were riding to the top wait shattered by the impact, and its unfortunate inmates overwhelmed by an avalanche of /dole. To properly understand their position it must be-premised that the head or light end of the beam having _en tered the shaft-first, the violent oscillations of the heavy end--if the expression may be used—to overtake the other would bring down with a crash an inconceivable amount of rubbish and planking. Two of the un fortunate men were instantly killed and precipitated to the bottom, while three others lingered only a very short time after being struck., The remaining two were also injured, but not seriously, and after the expiration of twelve weary hours, dur ing which every exertion was made to save them, - they were - nitiMately . rescued and brought to bank." TILE TXTOMBED. . By this catastrophe no less than two hundred men were .entombed in the bowels of the earth. Of coursepeople flocked from 'miles and miles around and instant efforts were made to relieve the unfortunates, but the labor of clearing away the debris was immense, and only half a dozen men could work in the choked up shaft at a time. WIZ BONNE ON SATI7IIDAY changed from that last recorded. What a change in the aspect of the place a short space of forty-eight hours has produced. Instead of the usual routine work of a coal mine in active and operation; nothing is to be seen around with groups of persons 'of both sexes watching with eager looks the monotonous and unvaried ascent and de scent of the: ropes heisting up the broken timber and rubbish with which the shaft is choked, to the upper seam, by which a con siderable saving of time is effected. thrall sides, wherever the eye is turned, groups and knots of people are seen sheltering themselves from the biting frosty sir be hind every sheltering projection about the buildings. Numbers of women, many of them having peeled, the ;dreary, cold, long *fib; exposed to the inclemency of the weather, their sense of physical pain being completely neutralized by the anguish of mind'under which they labored, are seen around. The excitement aroused by the first intelligence if the catastrophe has greatly subsided, and it has been suceeded by a feeling of patient, hopeful expecte tion.•-The wives of the jeopardized men pass from'place to plais, turning their wan, tear-swollen faces from one friend to an other, in the hope of gleaning some confir mation of their aspirations for the safety of those ` dearto them: One poor woman, named Oliver; has a husband and ale child ren besides s boy* whom they haie brought up, in the pit. Her anguish may be' im agined. Others are. similirly situated, though not, perhaps, to the same extent. Numbers of able and experienced miners are hurrying in from all the surrounding neighborhood, and offering their services. Among the episodes of the catastrophe we may mention that the elder Sharpe, . after . becoming covered with the' falling rubbish, was heard audibly praying, and his supplications ceased with his life. Watson, one of the men , rescued, joined with biotin his prayers • and received his last breath. Sharpe's wife has, daring to day, (Saturday) been waiting, in the full hope ot her husband being rescued alive, at one of the cabbie near the pit, with warm coffee and food; in expectation that they would be needed when her husband was brought. .1.0 bank.
