If Mr. Cowan votes for Bright, he will not only misrepresent-his censtitsents, but - ibrin the faceof the Legislature, and allfor air:arrant &traitor as ever lived: "the 'Duty we. Owe Our Government _in this the'Honr of her Direst Ex tremity." This was the themeofa lecture delivered by Gen. Jim LANE, ' before the Mercantile Library Association at Leavenworth,- on an hour's notice...We take a few extracts to 'show the . spirit which animates the man -in .14 war-against the rebellion : - When I - think who caused this war I feel like a fiend. When I think that the men who have been the_CabUiet officers, the. Sen ators, the Congressmen, the. Generals, the Colonels; when I think that the very men Who, - for twenty years, have fattened on this Government, are now raising_their hands to strike it down—l feel like taking them all by the throatlike throttling and strangling them all. _ For a quarter of a century I have been an actor in public affairs, and during all that time I have , seen twenty millions at the North governed and controlled by six millions at the'South. And no matter how extravagant the demand made by any one of these lords of the lash he had only to rieein his seat and say: "Mr. Speaker, unless this request is granted we shall se cede," and the Hotspur - gained a submissive acquiescence. - The South having failed in conquering Kansas, in making it a Slave State--failed, just a little, having failed to protect slavery : inside the Constitution, deliberately- and coolly went to work to establish its empire outside the Constitution. If any oneshould say to the South, "We will acknowledge your independence," would it secure peace to us for a day ? Never. But I will tell you what it would do. It would write "coward", in burning letters on the forehead •f every_free man and hand over to ' our children a war_which we ought to end our-, selves.- My children may call me every thing else ' but they shall never call me coward. War, war, perpetually, until the North is conquered by the South, or the South is conquered- by the .North. There are a class of persons who want to close this War, and permanently, but they want to fight in such a Way that' the slaves shall not be free. To carry out this policy, you must fight without_ killing .anybody. For if you kill a master the slaves will escape. Until the last ten days the policy has been to fight so as not to hurt slavery. and way-tin'close this war is to fight, and to fight . everythieg that stands in the way. Cruel 1 -I remember well,_ shortly after the bottle of Buena Dicta, report came into the.camp that a party of Mexican men, women and children had been butchered in the mountains. I was ordered out with a detachment of men, and brought in forty or fifty mutilated bodies, and reported to Gen. Taylor that they were butchered by the -Camanches. No one ever questioned Gen. _Taylor's goodness of heart or his skill as a soldier, bat he replied: "The Camanches seem to be fighting on the same side we are. We won'tinterfere with , them." Now, bar barism of the most terrible charactm• has marked every step of this war as waged by the rebels. I don't say I would call in the Camanches, but I do say that it would not pain me to see the negro handling a gun, and I believe the negro boy may just as well becomci food for, powder as my eon. For twenty years I was a respectable mem ber of the Democratic party. A Voice—" Not very respectable." - Well, I mean as respectable as any mem -ber of that party can be. Even in 1862 I was still d Democrat, when our party at Baltimoredenlared that all other subjects might be agitated, but - Slavery was sacred. We might "agitate" the Word of God, -agi tate" His law, "agitate" the golden streets of the golden city—but bele' re Slavery we must bow our faces in silence .—it was too sacred Lobe talked about. I have lost that reverence, and so much progress have I made that I'would not give one drop of the blood of the humblest soldier within the sound of my voice to save Slavery from eternal perdition. . • ' We. have lost just men_ enough for the preservation of Slavery, have made widows enotigh, orphans enough. Go yonder to that fierce fought battle, ground at Springfield. There out of twelve hundred, five hundred and -- Seventy killed and wounded 1. Kansas has offered up enough blood to this Moloch, and so has every other State. And I thank God our Government is safisfied that the war has gone along far enough in- that direction. Who feeds this rebellion? four million slaves. Who clothes this rebellion ? four Million slaves, Take, from that side and put them on this. [Applause.] If they were mules you would do it in a minute. -And-yet I think a man is worth more to the enemy - than a=mule. • • • • • • • .Bo terrific is the crime of these traitors, I care not who involves them in ruin and death. Let us teach them, treason against this Government is crime against God as well as spins& man.. -I care not whether -the punishment ii inflicted - on the battle field, on the gallows, or from the brush by a negro. Death! death,. that crushes out this terrible rebellion I—let our children remember that the punishment of treason is death I - • Why see here, it• almost unmans me to hear people talk about the constitutional rights" of Stites in rebellion, of States outsides of the Conetitution. Cum mings ordered a retreat. Some one cried that the day was lost, "every man for himself." Then theylhrew down everything that could impede_ their flight, and rushed for the in. trenehments and then for the river. The rush for the boat s was so great that. hundreds were crowded into•the river and drowned; the cav alry pushed into the swollen river. pall melt, and many' of them were also . drowned. The lowest estimate any of them put on the rebel loss was I,ooo—some saying lolly I,soo—but they stated that the majority , of them were drowned, When asked what the Union force was by which they were hemmed in, they replied that it could not bare been less than 30,000 or 40- 000. They.luid no idea where Gen. Crittenden was, and their estimate of the Union forces was the strongest evidence of the panic under which they fled. /13 , , this gentleman we learn that Parson Brownlow's health is very poor. Ills son stated that he doubted if his father would live to reach the Union lines; and if his health would permit, ho did . not believe the rebel guard would let him go. It is to be hoped,. however, that the defeat of Critten den's army, the death of Zollicoffar, and the panic which evidently now prevails all through East Teinessee, together with Gen. Thomas's advance, will open the way forth. safe arrival of the parson in a land of freedom. This gentleman is on his way to.see Andy Johnson, and reports that the rebels have seised Johnson's house, turning it into a hos pital, and confiscating all his property; that In order to save his mother • from -.the most fiendish persecution, one of Johnson's eons has taken the oath to support the rebel cause, or at least not to furnish aid and comfort to the Unionists. Another son is hiding among the hills, and has been since last December, looking with eager, longing eyes for the al, preach of the Union forces and the relief from a life of wretchedness. We einoerely trust the newe is—true that Gen. Thomas le advancing into Tennessee, and pray he may net stop till he bas taken po ion of Knoxville. :Thousands will Clock to hie standard, and the great avenue of communication between the East and West will thus be broken up.
