This day has been more exciting than any of its
predecessora. What with authentic reports, prob.

has furnished food for the conversation whidh
the city with ill; ham. Early is the day, the mend

set afloat. It M supposed that its foundation was
thus : It i■ known that lut night all the locomo

train South, were aunt away from 41101111111ril down
the line of the Orange and Alexandria Road. It
was supposed they were to he taken to Richmond
for the purpose of conveying the mob to Harper's
Ferry. To do this would, however, require some
time, inasmuch ay the rebels, alter putting over
the Idanaseas Gap Road, hove a march of 18 miles
to perform.
The Secretary of War has been in consultation
-with loyal Virgins on this matter, and it is said
on good authority, that the arms are to be removed
directly (Zola the arsenal to this city. The Super

deretsuding that it should not be accepted, his
only object being to steed better in Virginia. He
was elected to , the Convention es a Union man,
and had been regarded as honest. On Wednesday,
however, he telegraphed to the Department to have
his resignation accepted at once. This was dotfe,
and from that moment the gni,' at Harper's Ferry
wore considered as critical.
There has been ,much anxiety hero to-day, be

The belief is•very general that the atm - a will be

Georgetown Aqueduct, arid all the other np

distance to the - city by any nthe: route from Vir

body al troops would be ifiecovrred, and reported
in ample time to concentrate a ranee for it. de
