Tbe Battle of Sevan Fines. Curae all yon gallant heroes, Who now arc under arm, , Who wear the robes of honor, The Union uniform ; Couie listen to my ditty, I will iiug you a few lines Iu praise of Casey's soldiers At the battle of Seven l'iuos. It was the thirty-firnt of May, About the hour of one, The Hebcl force from Richmond Came proudly marching on, With ovorwhelniini; uumbure It was plainly their desiirii To crush our gallant Casey's force, And penetrate our line. The hill-tops and the valleys With Rebels soemed to swarm, And daidiiug down upon onr camps, Scarco iravo us time to form : But 'round the banners of the free We rallied with three cheers, With blow for blow we met the foe Like Yankee volunteers. Our Gen'ral, Silas Casey, Seemed in his prime ajrain, With swnrd in hand he faecd the foe, And rhecred his gallant men : "Stand firm, my boys '." the vet'ran cried, "Although they re two to one, We'll show them that our I'uion troops From danger never run." This gallant force was soon exposed To front and flanking fires, And, when overwhelmed by numbers, Reluctantly retires, Tet with the greatest-valor fought, Ih'sputing well the ground, While shot and shell amid them fell, Fast dealing death and wouud. In praise of Casey's forees Too much can. not be said, Although it was reported That they all bxsely ' fled '." For full five hours they fought their foe, When half of them were slain, And held the Rebel force in check, Till re-iuforceineuU came. Long live the brave artillerists! Their work was nobly done, They neither fled nor faltered, But stead'ly worked each gun ; Into the Rebel's columns Our iron hail fast pours, Plows bloody furrows through their ranks, And mows them down by scores. All honor to brave Casey ! All honor to his men I They, 'gainst a far superior force, Most nolly did contend; They bore the brunt of battle, Saved us from being slaves Millions of voices shout the praise Of Casey's gallant braves !
