UNION COUNTY STAR & LEWISBURG CnRONICLE-APKIL 15, 1802. 11 1! l TBlBire TO THE C4FT1IS Of THE MONITOR, ar ku. grum a. Koran, nuts. TJonor to John Ijoriiuer Vorden, The patriotic brave, YTbo came in time of proalcst need Our noble flett to save ; We'll join in grateful songs of praise, And this fliall lie the burden Which every loyal voice shall cing Houor to Captain Worden With thrillin" hearts and tearful eyes,' We read lite mournful story, Of those who found a watery grave, Yet live, all decked with jrlory : Their names shall stand on hi.-tory's page, I5e handed down from s;;e to ae The fate of that heroic baud Who perished iu the ''Cumberland." The booming pin and bnrtlinjr shell Sound o'er the tranquil water, Hie ingrate. traitor i-nw, approach And deal ont wounds and r-liuhtor; Firm hearts and stalwart Hrin- vrore there, And swift the older to prepare. "While from the niats the fl.vjs shall fly Until we counter or wc die ! The iron hail fall.-" thit-k and fast In crowds onr men are dyin? ; Sink or surrender !" is the cry 'We'll die with colors flying," MoBRIS, the lion -hearted, said ; The Kebcl death-bolts quickly sped, Their iron prow our timbers shiver, The oaken ribs sink in the river, Yet. ere thev sunk, those noble tars Cheered yet ai:ain the Stripes and .tars ! But WoRDE.n'R noble little craft, The "Monitor," drew near, To save the honor of the Tl'g To every freeman dear; E'en in the teeth of that dread foe He dealt the Eehels blow for blow. Thanks be to God '. she saved the day, And Victory's 1 aim she bore away. ghall we who sir iu peace at home, Our fireside bl'ws etijoyinfr. Our heartfelt tribute fail to brin;r, To him, our foes destroyinc; ? Then join in grateful fc nu's of praise, And let this be the burden Which every loyal heart shall sine; " Honor to Jurt.N L. WOBDEN I" The Bugbear "Abolition." When we were children, " B'aclc 31m colchyou!" wai the last tbreit to reduce as to obedience. The Slianocracv setm to think we are all children yet, for tbey try to earrj every point by crying, "Nig ger X igger 1 Abolition Abolition 1" llut let us examine, and see whether it il worth while to be scared to death. Ceoboi Washington, the Father of bis country, was a practical Abolitionist, and emancipated evert slave be held, lie wrote iu favor of a "Confederacy of Free States," and "approved" the act abolish ing Slavery in all the Territory, North west of the Ohio, formerly held by Vir ginia. Benjamin' Fbaskmn organized the first Anti-Slavery society in Pennsylvania, wbieb baa been in existence ever siuee, in Philadelphia. It is supposed he framed the noble and eloquent Act to Abolish. Slavery in Pennsylvsnia, about 1780, (which, please to find I'urdon's Digest, and read.) Thomas Jefferson's strong abolition writings are perhaps well enough known. Adams, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, Yak Bcbes, Clat and Tolk, all ap prove! the Congressional legislation to live parts of oar land from the curse of Slavery. Most of the original thirteen States did abolish Slavery, according to the Compro mise when the Constitution was formed and all the Civilized World are moving for the Abolition of Slavery. With these noble examples before the people of the country for their imitation, yen frequently tear self-styled "Demo crats" denouncing citizens because they faver abolition, while the Slave-Drivers are nseing their whole povjer to destroy the Union. Such fellows are too danib to be envied by some contrabands. They know nothing of the couutrj's history, or tbey falsify their consciences, and misrep resent what thev do know. There ere soae 'fanstical' Abolitionists, (and 'fsnat icil' Democrats ,) bat that docs not alter the ereet fact that Slavery it a monstrous rrit, that thould he fnt checked, and then "ameliorated to exterminating' in the lan guage of Scott. There are "fanatics," or "ultras," or nnwise friends, in every party end sect : bnt the cause remains, lured neither by the perfections nor the imperfections of its advocates. Wa Prices. A certain class of peo ple eoaplaia o( what they eall "war prices." That some things have advanced to price, if true, but when compared with the prices caused by the War of 1812, we certainly have no reason to complain. The editor of the Bloomsbnrg Republican has been shown a store bill, made out by a firm of that place, dated May 4, 1314, in Which ei.ffts ischsrged forty cents a pound, Common sugar forty oenta, and other things in proportion. The advance, thou, Was from neeesaity most of it, now, is purely spcOTlativ1jWS h Stripes."
