At a recent meeting of the anti-Buchanan
Democracy of "old Berks," Col. John W. For
ney was present by invitation, and delivered
one of his characteristic speeches. In alla
ding to ihe venerable occupant of the Presi
dential chair, the Colonel said :

cause of this state of affairs. The county of
Berks has never been friendly to James Bu
chanan. It distrusted him in ihe days of 18S4,

certainly had distinguished himself in the
nation's councils as an able statesman. No
