I FRANCE IS AFTER FUR PROFITEERS Excessive Prices. Are Paid For Them ; (iovernment Is to Take Action Paris-—The French government is inquiring into the high cost of wom en's furs, because "they have be come practically a necessity since winter fashions dictate their use." Encouraged by success of its cam paigns to check rising prices of oth er necessities, the government ex pects to bring the pelt of the beaver and mink down lo tit. the purse of "the thinnest clad grisette." French women in Paris, although it is near midwinter, now wear knee skirts and dresses of the sheerest material. This, in the opinion of the government, makes it necessary the women have some warm overgar ment, and since they want furs the government has decided they shall not be overcharged for them. Scores of fur shops recently have opened in Paris. Their owners ap parently are leaping rich harvests, for many women have furs. Fair occupants of boxes at the opera of ten have furs' valued' at 100,000 francs, and in restaurants one may see pelts of priceless value. Before the war, the government figures show , France's fur sales were not more than 800,000,000 francs annually. Now, it is esti mated, the trade will reach 500,000,- 000 francs. Retail prices have quadrupled. Even rat skins are worth thirty francs each. Dealers insist they pur chased their stocks in Germany, and are making only legit-mute profits, but the government intends to find out for itself. Firemen to Erect Their Memorial in City Park ! Mayor Daniel L. Roister, chairman jof a committee in charge of ar rangements lor the erection of a monument to volunteer firemen of the city who served during the war, ; announced further plans for the pro posed memorial. It is planned to erect the monu ment in one of the.local parks. It will cost from SB,OOO to SIO,OOO, and the committee now plans to have It erected as a memorial to the fire men who were in service and also in honor of the work of the volunteer department. "Harrisburg will soon become a second-class city and will have a paid fire department," Mapor Keis ter said. "We plun to use the monu ment both to commemorate the sol dier heroes of the fire companies and the excellent work of the vol unteer fire-fighters." Each company has offered to pay SIOO toward the cost of the me -1 morial, and it is planned to raise | $2,800 additional by contributions of $1 from each fireman. The balance will be raised by a firemen's bazar and similar events. There will be no soliciting of funds from the gen eral public, Mayor Keister declared. Market to State, to be used by the Harrisburg Railways -Company, when it is necessary to abandon the tracks in State street from Fourth to Thirteenth, because of the erection of the Memorial bridge. Cars running east and west in State street will be rerouted, it is un derstood, so that they will come to Market Square through the. Market street subway. Mayor Daniel L. Keister presented an ordinance prohibiting parking in the east side of North Fourth street, Market to Strawberry street. He ex plained that frequently traffic is blocked at that intersection by auto mobiles being parked in the east side of the street, preventing northbound traffic because of street cars and other vehicles southbound in the middle and west side of the street.
