GRAND ARMY SPIRIT IS YOUNG AS EVER [Continued from FlrHt Page.] evening while the members were get ting ready for Decoration liay. Getting Along Famously "Preparations for retirement?" countered a vigorous, up-standing veteran of Gettysburg and many an other campaign," 'why, the Grand Army is just as tit to tight in siprit, at least, as it was when Father Abraham issued his rail for tho first hundred thousand. We arc getting along famously. The Post room is more popular than ever and we have given no thought to the time when we shall step down and out. We have yeras moro of activity before us." That Is the general feeling among G. A. R. men of Harrlsburg Post 58, which is the oldest in the city, has met in its rooms in College Block, in North Third street, over since it was organized. In its qifarters are housdcl many priceless relics of the Civil War, including the old Camp Curtin pump, from which thousands of Union soldiers drank in the Civil War period when Camp Curtin, lo cuted ahove what is now Maclay street, was the great clearinghouse tor Pennsylvania men going in and; out of the sorvico. Pest 8, by the way, as well as Post 116 and Post 528, the latter a colored organiza tion, are actively back of Senator Smith's hill for the erection of a memorial on the site of this famous camp not far from where the old pump stood. At the instance 'of Gov ernor Brumbaugh, who recommend ed it in a message to the Legislature, and by means of an appropriation fathered by Lieutenant-Governor Boidleman when he was a'member of the Senate, a plot of ground was purchased adjacent to the camp Cur tin Memorial church, but there was no money for the memorial itself, consequently Senator Smith has re newed the effort backed by Harris burg veterans. Post 110 Is Active Post 58 has 195 members, all of them active And interested and most of whom say they will march in the Memorial Lay parade, although automobiles will he provided for those who cannot walk. Hurry S. Watson is commander, Michael Ployd senior vice-commander; Harry Bennet, Jr., junior, vice-commander; P. I. Thomas, quartermaster, and Hurry W. Newman, adjutant. Post 116 is named In honor of Col. Seneca G. Simmons, a noted Civil War soldier, and its post rooms have been located for many years in Verbclte street, a stonesthrow away from where the old Simmons homestead looks out over the rip pling waters of the Susquehanna, a quaint old stone residence that still maintains the air of ante-bellum days and is a landmark in the neigh borhood. John N'. Kunkle, who will be one of the Memorial Day miu shals, is the Post commander and William M. Moore is adjutant. The Post rooms, which have been locat ed In Klnnard's hall alnce organisa tion, contain many rare picture* and relics of the war period. Few Survive The venerable Col. James'M. Auter, for more than a generation door keeper at the Executive Department, on Capitol Hill, personal friend of many Governors, and noted states men, who has seen more officials come nnd go than any other man at the Capitol, is the commander and the leading spirit of Post 528, which is made up of the colored men of I-larrisburg who did their part to preserve the Union. Colonel Auter still maintains the Post organization, but he has seen It steadily fall, by reason of death and removal from the city, until now only twelve of the brave men who flocked to its banner when it was first flown to the breeze, remain to march beneath its faded folds on Memorial Day. But every man of them will be out. James H. Barton Is the adjutant of the Post. "There is only one thing to do," said Colonel Auter, as he breathed a sign of regret for the time when the Po3t shall be no more, "keep right on go ing until the Post passes out of ex istence in the natural order of events." And that is the brave and philosophical view taken by all Har risburg veterans. The Posts of the county, however, have not been so fortunate. In the smaller towns they passed out of ex istence for the most part some years ago, death having reduced the ranks until the remaining membership was not, sufficient to pay expenses of up keep. Halifax bowed to the inevi table some time ago. Ellzabethvillo followed a little later, but in this town the rolls of the Post have been turned over to County Recorder James E. Lentz, who has promised the veterans surviving that each Memorial Day he will see that the graves they used to decorate shall be marked by flowers and a flag, in each year the survivors are taken the rounds of the cemeteries of that region in automobiles where services are held and the graves decorated. This year Captain E. J. Stackpole, Jr., of the Keystone Division, will be the Memorial Day speaker at Eliza bethville upon invitation of Mr. Lentz.
