den and he now has the honor of
raising one of the largest tomatoes
grown In the city. He Is shown above
holding the tomato, which is IS to

and fifteen Inches vertically, weigh
ing more than one pound. Melvin is
staying at ISHO Derry street with Mr.
and Mrs. Ross Potts, and his war gar
den is located in Twenty-third, near

Dutch Ships Will Bring
Sugar to United States
Washington, Aug. 16.—Forty
Dutch ships, • totaling approximately
100,000 tons, now idle in Dutch East
Indian ports, are expected to Ire re
leased to bring sugar, tin, quinine
and other commodities to the United
States.
Tonnage placed at the disposal of
the American government through
the agreement will be sufficient, it
was estimated yesterday, to Import
from 50,000 to 100,000 tons of sugar
and also much needed quantities of
tin and quinine.

Eighty-four members of the Steven?
Railroad Commission, sent from the
United States to Russia in May,
1917, to assist in the rehabilitation
of the Russian railroads, and who
have been at Xagaski for the past
eight months, have arrived here.
They will begin work on the Siberian
railroad behind the Czecho-Slovak
lines between this city and Kr.aba
vorsk.
Aurora Borealis Affects

Xew York. Aug. 16. —Telegraph
wire service in a large area in the
east and west was hampered last
night by the electrical phenomenon
known as the aurora borealis, or
"northern lights."

said cable and land lines were af
fected. especially In Xew Brunswick,
Xova Scotia and Maine, service be
ing Intermittently interrupted.
Stock Exchange Gets
Ready For Fourth Loan

Xew York. Aug. 16. The Stock
Exchange announced to-day that It
had sold all its non-taxr.ble 3to per
cent. Liberty Bonds in order to sub
scribe to the next Libfrty Loan. This
step was taken by the governors of
the exchange as an example to other
Institutions, corporations and indi
viduals to take similar action and
reinvest In taxable war bonds. The
amount of the Stos sold by the Ex
change was not disclosed.

who was convicted of placing bombs
on ships carrying supplies and troops
to Europe and who escaped after be
ing sentenced to the penitentiary, has
been apprehended in Spain.
