J WAR MAP SHOWS YANKEES FIRM Drafted Men Raise No Voice of Complaint in United States Plan I Washington. —The war map with its trench lines straggling athwart international boundaries shows American fighting men holding their footing on strangely alien soils. As It now stands army units of the United States are at their grim work | in six countries, France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Belgium. I The swelling volume of their movement overseas has been so nec essary a response to the emergency |of the nation's responsibility, go : thoroughly implied by the original | war declaration, and so entirely na | tural a picture to a people prepared ' "y three years* observation of world wnr , that it may take a historian's perspective to visualize completely the departure from traditions and | the smashing of precedents that the ! movement involved. ' .„F heckin S t * le s ' x > American ar i tillery has been reported on the I'rench lino opposite Mulhausen, sev | oral miles inside the border of the | German empire. In Austria, the olive-drab uniform supports Italian ! s ®°i or f which swing round the toe I or. Lake Garda, and American fliers j nave maneuvered over the Venetian lowlands where the Austrian drive I was forced back this spring. In Bel | gium, they have gone over the top | with Australians and in France their 1 forces in action now can be counted by army corps. In Russia, at Vladi j vostock and now on the frozen I reaches of the Murman coast they | are putting disciplined forces be i hind the manifold manifestations of I national purpose. Likewise, in Eng j land, Scotland and Ireland, they fill ! up the school camps and prepare j themselves for action, j These men, drafted nearly all, \re the agents in the far-flung journey | ings of a nation whose military his-- I tory has shown more than one in j stance in which volunteers, ordered I to cross a boundary, have sat down. , private and officers alike, to debate the constitutionality of a warlike ex pedition to foreign soil, and still more instances where militia organi zations have successfully opposed national attempts to send them b©- j yond their own state lines. Yet to-day, under the urge of tho war resolution, which directed the administration "to exert all of its power and employ all of its resources | to carry on war against the Imper ; ial German government and to bring I the conflict to a successful conclu sion,"- drafted men and volunteers ! have not raised a single protest of ' serious import. | It was not until January of the present year that the Supreme Court formerly construed the Constitution | to allow any sort of war operation | the nation desired to carry on. The j court said of contentions opposing that vle-fc that they "were too frivo lous for notice." I Yet long before the decision the first drafted American had fallen in battle* overseas and legions more j had streamed after him to every i quarter, almost, of the Eurasian con | tinent. Thus the historian has been given I a large and interesting mile-post to build in the future, but for the aver age American, the news of the day shows that this interest is purely ab stract. It having been definitely de cided, upon due and formal consider ation, that a complete defeat of Germany was necessary to democ racy in the world, the nation has not even remembered precedents of his tory or traditions of the past. Late Picture of Allied Army Leader SSSEI * 1 GE*raxe.A.i> TOCH . When France celebrates the fourth anniversary of her entrance into the war on the fourth of August, the name of General Ferdinand Foch. Commander-in-Chief of the Allied armies on the field of battle, will be the one foremost in the mlnda and hearts of the French people. The photo of General Foch is one of the latest to arrive in this country. LEGAL NOTICES " Estate of Adaline Baldwin, deceased.
