"The Home Service Bureau has taken care of ninety-two families of enlisted men during the month, their services covering financial as sistance as well as friendly calls. "The canteen committee, reports the amazing total of 6,932 soldiers cared for on their way through Har risburg. In one Instance thirty-seven men missed their train connections and were stranded here from 8.15 a. j m. until 5.10 p. 111. They were taken 1 care of at one of the restaurants | and sent In automobiles through the i city parks. These were all medical ; | men from Camp Hamilton. In an-I other instance a trainload of men! | were provided with food and coffee! ' and a sick soldier cared for, on ex- j actly four minutes notice. His latest bit of real service was performed last nlgtit, when called at his home in Millers burg at 9.30 o'clock, he was appealed to in a fashion something like this: "Won't you please Issue us a li cense. A hurried prepara tion for a trip to Harrisburg was next, Mr. Alvord leaving Millersburg at 9.52 P. M. He returned on a train leaving Harrisburg at midnight, tak ing with him the necessary blanks. The marriage license was issued at 1 o'clock this morning to Miss Helen Independence Wingard, of Millers burg, and Homer L, Van Aken, of Amsterdam, New York. Both are graduates of State College, the form er serving on the faculty there and the later becoming a bank clerk. Frank R. Downey Elected President of Furniture Men For Fourth Time Frank R. Downey, manager of the Gately and Fitzgerald Supply Com pany, was re-elected president of the Harrisburg Furniture Dealers Association for the fourth time, at u meeting of the association held at the Boiling Springs Hotel last night. Members of the organisation motored to Boiling Springs and, pre ceding the meeting, a supper was served. Other officers elected were Lee Goldsmith, vice-president, and Wil liam H. Fire Started in Kitchen Does Little Damage The Good Will Fire Company ex tinguished a small blaze in the dwelling at 1531 Williams street this morning before much damage was done. A fire in the kitchen range started the blaze in the kitchen, which spread up the stairway In the back of the house to the second floor. The flre was extinguished with the use of a, hand chemical lank. The alarm was pulled from Fiox 212 at Third and Vcrbeke at 0.89 o'clock and the companies In the district responded. TO WIDEN STREET Plans for widening Second street and Linglestown road to eighty feet, in a large tract north of the city line owned by Colonel Frederick M. Ott, were approved to-day at a special meeting of the City Planning Com mission. The plans will conform with those now being made in the plotting of the Fourteenth Ward, which was recently annexed. Two other plans were approved by the commission, one for a block of lots in the borough of Paxtang and another for lots at Enola. The latter plan was made several years ago by Ira Shaull, but was presented for approval to comply with the law giving the commission jurisdiction over territory within three miles of the city limits. Rapid Progress Is Made on New Open Air School Practically all building work at the new open air school at Fifth and Seneca streets has been completed, the architect reported to-day, and within the next few weeks the city school di rector.} will be given their first op portunity to ii'spect the'building just before the equipment is Installed. Much of this has been ordered and is expected to reach the city soon, so that all of the work cun be finished late In August. The building will then be dedicated and will be opehed in September. A number of other changes will be made by the school district this year, including the removal of the Teachers Training school to the Steele build ing and the abandoning of one of the rooms in the present administration building, which will then be used for u storage room. The large room used for the training school may be used for the meetings of the board, and the room now used by the board used for office purposes.
