"The war will he decided in 1935, not by the feats on the bat tlefield, but by the product of this generation," she declared. The emphasis should be put on the .child in endeavoring to insure the next generation. With the Hold of labor growing larger every day, it is impossible to maintain a large force of salaried workers. I.—Discussing a German raid upon the trenches held by the American forces, Secretary Baker said it would not be improper to deduce from the casuaytl 'lst the fact that American troops were in possession of a trench sector and had fon ; ".in military contact" with the enemy. Ife omphasized the fact, how ever, that it would be most improper to draw the conclusion that their present location in the allied lines is permanent, although admitting that any announcement of Pershing hav ing taken over a portion of the line would come from the American expe ditionary headquarters. Secretary Baker said frankly that General Pershing, from his position with the troops, would be better able to determine when this Information could do n harm. Mt. War Moves Held Up Airplane Program Washington, Feb. 1. America's airplane program, which will cost IX,- 000,000,000 in addition to the (640 - 000,000 already expended, has been delayed two months by successive changes in the type of combat ma chines and by drafting thousands of skilled toolmakers Into the Notional Army. This statement was made bv Colonel E. A. Deeds, U. S. A., Signal Corps, member of the Aircraft Pro duction Board, before the Henate com mittee on military affairs. The changes have largely been due to al tering plans to meet th ever-chang ing tactics of the Germans. This delay in aircraft production and investigation of the activities oi H. D. Baker, brother of the Secretary of War, in securing contracts for the Engel Aircraft Company, of Nile 1 - Ohio, were the principal subjects cov ored by the committee. Coloned Deeds specifically denied that Mr. Baker had been in any way favored by contracts or that higher profits were given his company than were paid to other con tractors. The fight over the Chamberlain war cabinet biP and the bill providing for a director of munitions will be start ed again in the Senate on Monday.
