E. Beidleman, of Harrisburg, as a candidate for the nomination for Lieutenant Governor. Senator Beid leman is said to be strong with the labor element in Western Pennsyl vania and this strength would be ex pected to offset the popularity which the Vare forces are claiming for Con gressman John R. K. Scott, among the rank and file in Allegheny and other western counties. In the event ,ot another state-wide fight within i the ranks both Beidleman and Rep resentative James F. Woodward, of Allegheny, are said to be practically sure of places on the Penrose slate. Beidleman is said to be assured of a place because of the friendly feeling of labor toward him, and the slating of Woodward is counted upon to offset some of the strength of O'Nell in O'Neil's home bailiwick." The Record also says: "While O'Nell seems particularly anxious to get thesupport of the Governor and the Vares, his friends say that he Is not worrying, and if the Vare-Brum baugh forces should patch up a truce with the Pehrose machine be fore the primary, O'Neil will go right into the huge task of attempting to beat the reunited organization at the polls. He plans to recruit his strength by appealing directly to the 'common people,' who ho thinks, are tired of the old way of doing things. To get himself before thepeople, O'Neil Is said to be planning to wage a 'soap box campaign' on the Btreet corners. He followed this method successfully in one of his aggressive campaigns in Allegheny county, and thinks there is no reason why It should not ap peal to the people of the state at large. Just as 'Golden Rule' Jones used to sweep Toledo, 0.. In his may oralty fights years ago by appealing to thepeople at street corner meet ings, O'Nell thinks he can rouse up the people of Pennsylvania to hoist hi minto the Governor's chair. One of the first places he plans to Invade with his openair meetings is Phila delphia, and from here he Intends to go all over the state, following the same plan of action." Eye Witnesses of Italian Attack Tell Thrilling Story By Associated Press Italian Headquarters, In Northern Italy, Wednesday, Jan. 30. Eye wit nesses of the Italian attack of the past few days on the Aslsgo plateau tell a story of thrilling interest. From their accounts it appears that the first Italian rush was in the darkness at 3 o'clock Monday morn ing. The sleeping enemy forces were taken completely by surprise. The Alpini were in the thick of this fight ing and by daylight they had swept the first line trenches and had taken an old church which formed a stra i teglc in the enemy line of de fense. They were vigorously sup ' porting the heroic gassarl brigade I which took and retook the height of Col Del Rosso three times against the I stubborn, desperate resistance of the enemy. These early movements were a di version to screen the main movement on the right where a stroke was de livered for the idominating height of Monte D 1 Val Bella. It was here that the most severe fighting occurred ! through Monday night and in the . early hours of Tuesday. Italian ■ storming troops took the eastern and western slopes, and by eleven o'clock. i Tuesday morning, had cut their way I to the summit and were establishing 1 themselves firmly In definite control . of the key position.
