SCHOOL COUNCIL * WORKING WELL Student Government in Hum melstown High School Aids Discipline Student government in the Hum metstown High School has resulted in a big improvement in the discipline of the pupils, according to Professor A. Geesey, principal of the school, **t whose suggestion the plan was worked out. •The students several months ago were asked to vote on the question of self-government, the ballot show ing a big majority in favor of the plan. The council Includes t.hrce seniors, three Juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. The teachers act as ex-offlcio members. The students then decided'on all the rules for discipline in the school, in the study halls and when classes go from one roop to another. The governing body meets every Tuesday night to discuss any Improvements which can be made and to make suggestions in the rules under which all the pi'pils are con trolled. Just how successful the plan has been can be gathered from a few renarks by Professor Geesey: Within the last few months the students have demonstrated to mo and to the other members of the faculty that they can take charge of the school themselves. We have a pupil in charge of the study hall, and others overseeing the changing of groups from one classroom to an other. There has been a big im provement in the discipline from the time the system was Jtartud and all the pupils are co-operacing to make it a success." HO.—On Friday evening the Waynesville lit erary Society met In the schoolroom and many interesting topics were discussed by the pupila and people of the community. The principal themes were those on "Education," "Character," "Charity" and "Farm ing." A dramatization was success fully given by the second class. C. E. Wise spoke on the "Provisioning of a Modern Steamer," and H. J. Budd delivered an address on "King Alcohol." Music was furnished by the Waynesville orchestra, Messrs. Miller, Moss and Dill. After elect ing H. Budd, president, and Miss Gertrude Hoover, secretary, the meeting adjourned. \ ■ ; HKKPUBBURG tf&Sfa TEEEQrRXPH FOOD COMMITTEE READY FOR WORK Representative in Upper End of County Names Men to Aid in the Campaign Halifax, Pa., Jan. 30.—This week the Dauphin County Committee of Food Supply, of which Donald Mc- Cormick. of Harrisburg, is chairman, named Prof. S. C. Beitzel as their representative in Halifax borough and township and gave him authority to appoint committees. For the borough he has appointed as his aids O. S. Hill, the Rev. H. B. Slider, R. A. Shumaker and H. S. Potter. In the township he has named Theodore H. I.ebo, C. I. Glace, John W. Clemson, Saint L. Sheetz. The duty of these committees Is to secure seed for farmers and garden ers, school gardens and the incfease of live stock, encourage and create roadside markets and other means of disposing of crops at fair prices for producer and consumer. Food saving will be urged and canning and other demonstrations arranged to assist the housewife. Columbia Firemen Ask For Motor Apparatus Columbia, Pa., Jan. 30.—Borough firemen at a mass meeting Monday night decided to petition Council to increase the amount of their appro priations so that they would be able to motorize the fire apparatus and H. M. North, Jr., who presided, and made the principal address, was instructed to name a committee to represent each of the live compa nies. Dr. G. W. Bernthelzel, ex-pres ident of the State Firemen's Asso ciation, was one of the speakers and made a strong plea for the Increase. The borough has reached the limit of its borrowing capacity and Coun cil contends that to Increase appro priations would mean to Increase the tax rate.
