Little Ugh! was thrown to-day on the terrible tragedy which took place In the guardhouse at Middletown shortly after 12 o'clock Saturday night when three soldiers, members of the 113 th Aero Squadron United States Signal Corps, were burned to death. The men who lost their lives in this cruel manner were Private E. P. Gallagher, Marshall, Pa.; Pri vate Holland D. Wiley, Rockford, 111., and Private W. J. Kramer, De troit. The mother of Kramer had just finished a Christmas box for her soldier boy when the news that he had been burned to death arrived. She was instantly prostrated. The theory of Major Garrison, squadron commander, is that the men, who had been locked up in the guardhouse for petty offenses, had used some tar paper in the stove be fore turning' In. The sentry on duty had made his rounds not more than two minutes before the building wtis in a blaze. He was only twenty-five yards away at the moment, and he says that when he passed he did nol smell smoke or see any fire. Sound ing the alarm instantly the guard broke in and managed to drag out Wiley who was unconscious and died shortly afterward without able to give any detals. r "<sallaj|'h£*' lf and Kramer were burned almost tc a crisp. Major Garrison gave It as hi? opinion that gas was generated and an explosion in the stove followed, so ttiat the men may have been over come with the fumes before the fire reached them. The sentry and the corporal of the guard were unable to gain admission promptly, although the corporal had a key, the body of Wiley having fallen against the door. The build ing was frame, lined with tar paper. MILLIONAIRES STRIP I/AWNS TO DIG COAL UNDER til EM Fashionable Pittsburgh District to Find Relief in Six-Foot Veins Pittsburgh, Dec. 17.—Millionaires of this city are stripping their heauti ful lawns in the fashionable Squirrel Hill district to get coal, the short age of which is causing no end of misery in tho lat-gc mansions of that district. Saturday a dozen men, with tho latest model coal strippers, started working on the lawn of H. A. Die-. bold, in Aylesborough avenue. The lawn is all to be dug up and the few feet of earth covering the coal vein is to be removed. There is said to be a six-foot vein.a few feet under the sod. The property is valued at $l5O a fot, making It the most val uable, coal mining property on rec ord. A somewhat similar and larger operation, is under way on the F, N. Hoffstott tract, at Beacon and WigM man streets. This ground also has a six-foot coal vein under it that is to be removed. It is said enough coal will be realized in this way to al most satisfy the demands of the dis trict, the owners of the property having agreed to dispose of what remains after they have obtained a supply for themselves. RED CROSS IIOME SERVICE FACTOR IX ARMY MORALE Keeps Men From Worry While at Front, Says Civilian Relief Director New York, Dec. 17. —Every reporl from the training camps in-America and from the French front indicates the American troops are in excel lent spirits. W. Frank Pearsons, director general of civilian relief of the American Red Cross, said to-day in an address before tho American Academy of Political Science, meet ing here. Whether the soldiers will main tain this moral ethrough trench life and battle to the end will be deter mined, he said, largely by the home,/ service of the Red. Cross. "Men may be the best soldiers in the world," he declared, "but if things are not well with their families they worry and lose efficiency and the morale, that all-important factor, begins to fail." , MISS JANE MOODY RTTRTER Dauphin, Pa., Deo. 17.—Funeral services for Miss Jane Moody were held here to-day on the arrival of 11.29 "train.
