Bryan Stirred to Anger
on Question of Pacifism; '
Nation Behind Government
Philadelphia, Pa.. Nov. 19.—Be
fore going to the Metropolitan opera,
house yesterday to address the pro
hibition mass meeting:, William Jen
nings Bryan granted an interview to
newspapermen in the lobby of the
Belevue-Stratford. He said he was in
a hurry and he evidently was, but he
cut the interview short when he was
asked if he thought the activities of
pacifists before the war had anything
to do with drawing the nation Into
the conflict.
"That is not a proper question for a
loyal citizen to ask." he shot back.
"And I am through with you."
"But Colonel Roosevelt says that
is tlie fact. Would you call him a dis
loyal citizen?" he was asked.
"You will have to ask him," was l
his reply.
Mr. Bryan answered questions
from others, however, predicing that
nation-wide prohibition was • inevit
able. He declared the liquor tax had
proved effective in closing a great
many saloons, but he said the great
force against the saloon was public
opinion and public sentiment.
He declared his attitude was
wholly in support of the government.
He said he found the country whole
heartedly in support of the war.
Cases of apathy or dissatisfaction, he
said, appeared numerous because
they were so widely scattered.
"In my opinion," he said, "the gov
ernment is doing everything it should
<io in regard to a successful prosecu
tion of the war. I have not discussed
the question of dissatisfaction with
the war, but 1 am certain the coun
try is behind the government."
Mr. Bryan then was asked about
the reports from Allentown to the
effect that the soldiers there refused
to attend the lecture on the ground
that he was a pacifist. He said these
reports were not true. •
"Will the conduct of the war be an
. issue in the next Presidential cam- •
paign?" he was asked.
I "No one can say anything about
that," was his reply.
Mr. Bryan also denied the story
that he had been chased up a tree by
a bull out in Arizona.
