4 IMPORTANT NEWS OF TOWNS IN CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA CANNING EXPERT IN ADAMS COUNTY State College Representative Holds Number of Demon strations For Housewives SOLDIERS' REST ROOMS Former Student at College in France With General Per shing's Expedition Gettysburg, Pa., July T. Under the direction of the county farm agent, H. F. Hershey, a number of demon strations were given during the week to the housewives In the different parts of Adams county on the subject of canning fruits. The demonstra tions were given by a canning expert from State College. Almost every available place in the town has been opened as readingrooms and rest places for the soldier boys, and they are making good use of them. A former citizen of Gettysburg is among the men who have landed in France with the army under General Persh ing. The man. Adolph Weldenbach, is a German, who had been naturalized" In the Adams county courts while at tending college here, from which in stitution he graduated, and left here to enlist in the army. While visit ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tressler, near Kingsdale, Mrs. Aaron Spangler, of McSherrys town, slipped on a cement walk and sustained a fracture of the right leg. This is the fourth time the same limb has been broken. Two of Gettys burg's young men have received no tices of their acceptance in the Medi cal Reserve Corps of the United States army. Dr. Maurice Weaver, who Is now connected with one of the hos pitals at Pittsburgh, has been ordesed to report to Washington in several weeks, and Dr. Edgar A. Miller, a prac ticing physician at East Berlin, has been ordered to provide himself with the necessary equipment and await further orders. An unusual sub scription for Red Cross work was made through the Gettysburg Chap ter, when Mrs. J. A. Hankel donated $1 for the training of the Red Cross dogs. Canadian Soldier Lectures For Benefit of Red Cross Newville, Pa., July 7.—ln the lec ture given by Corporal Agate, in the High School Auditorium, he told of his experience during the twenty one months he served as a member of the Second British Columbia In fantry, one of the Canadian regi ments that has made a good record. Having been wounded three times the Corporal has been compelled to take a rest in tlfis country, but will return to duty within a month. The lecture was given under the auspices of the Red Cross branch. Several months ago Graham Geedy, sales man in Paul E. Marys vile has 23 residents enrolled under the stars and stripes and in this number there is found one woman. She is Miss Jennie Gault. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Gault, of Val ley street. She is now located "somewhere in France." Miss Gault reached France re cently with a Red Cross contingent of physicians and nurses. She was sent out from the Pennsylvania Base No. 10. Miss Gault was graduated from the Marysville High School, class of 1910, and almost im mediately enrolled as a student nurse at the Germantown Hospital, Phila delphia. The "Old Boys"- of Greencastle have arranged to hold an "Old Home Week" August 5 to 12. Leslenring, baked her own birthday cake at her recent birth day anniversary. Her hobby is pies, and for many years she was the champion pie baker of Montour county. Mrs. Grove can sew and read without glasses and finds it no trouble to walk a mile. She has pieced more than forty comfortables during her recent years. Mrs. Grove was born In New Castle, England, May 26, 1829. At the age ot nine she was brought to Danville by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown where she has lived ever since. Her husband.
