PROMOTION FOR BATTLE VICTOR [Continued From First Page.] I submarines, they have subjected the | prisoners to unusual severity. Report Confirmed The Navy Department received I word some days ago of the action ] between the Silver Shell and the submarine. Inquiries were made promptly of the naval gun crew at the port where the ship had arrived and the account of the battle was confirmed. Secretary Daniels said his advices added nothing to the de tails of the fight already published. As turret captain of the dread naught Arkansas, Clark has held high rating among warrant officers for the navy and was selected to command the guard on the Silver Shell because of his ability and steadiness proven through years of naval service. French Front Quiet The French front is comparative ly quiet. The only development of note last night was a German attack northwest of St. Quentin. This was quickly checked by the French fire. Conditions in Russia appear more promising from several angles. For one thing the incident at Kronstadt, with its revolting fortress garrison and declaration of independence, has been adjusted, the self-constituted Kronstadt authorities recognizing the authority of the provisional gov ernment. This quickly follows indi cations of increasing control of the situation by Minister of War Kerensky and the settlement of the threatened munition strike in Pet rograd. Million Pounds of High Explosive Wrecks Lines Held by German Army British Headquarters in France, (From a Staff Correspondent of the Associated Press), June 7, via Lon don.—The British rush this morning on the Messlnes-Wytschaete ridge of the Belgian front tookthem well over the ridge where they are now en trenching. The village of Messines was re ported to have been taken early in the fighting. It was also reported that Lenfer and Zareeba had fallen and that Wytschaete had been sur rounded by the British storming troops. The British also captured import ant trench positions all the way from Observation Ridge southeast of Ypres to Ploegsteert wood, north of Armentieres. More than one mil lion pounds of high explosives was blown up under the German for ward positions. This, the most gi gantic mining optration in the his- j tory of war, spread panic among the Germans. Italian Troops Have Been Taken Prisoners By Associated Press London. June 7. The capture of more than 10,000 Italians in three days is claimed in the Austrian offi cial statement issued on Wednesday. The text of the statement follows: "Eastern theater. On the Oituz road a weak enemy thrust was crushed by our barrage fire. Other wise there was only more lively in fantry activity in places. "Italian theater: The enemy yes terday exhausted himself in fruitless attacks between the Vippacco valley and the sea intended to wipe out the defeat he suffered in the last few days on the Oarso plateau. His as saults were shattered. Our troops, by storming a height near Jamiano, enlarged their success and in tierce I battles maintained all ground won. "According to preliminary reports the prisoners in the last three days have been increased to 25fi officers, including four staff officers and 10,- 000 men. Some Italian regiments fell into our hands unwounded, with nearly the whole of their effectives. For instance the Eighty-sixth regi ment with 2.K86 men. the Sixty-ninth regiment with 1,932 men and the Seventy-flrst regiment with 1,831 men. The brigade of Verno, Syra cuse. Puglia and Ancona, in whose ranks these units fought, were anni hilated. In a tunnel near San Gio vanni a large field hospital was cap tured. The battlefield is covered with Italian corpses. "On the moonlit night the Fifth Italian airmen visited towns and places far behind our front. In the Austrian interior they came as far as Laibach, in the Tyrol as far as Bozen, in addition to raiding the coastal district and Carinthia. Some inhabitants were killed, but there was no material damage."
