been clothed with authority to spend
$10,000,000,000 of American money!

New York, in defense of Baruch, as-1
serted that his connection with the;
copper interests of the United States j
had made it possible for Baruch to!
supply the Government all the cop-;
per it needed at 16 cents a pound j
when the market price was :!0 cents, j
Speaker Champ Clark took a hand
in the controversy.
"Do you know," he asked Rcpre- j
sentative Lunn, "that the Utah Cop
per Company made an official report
to its board of directors that it could
furnish copper on the cars ready lot
shipment at cents a pound?"
"Well," answered Lunn, "Mr. Ba-,
ruch seems to have brought the price'
down from 30 cents a pound to 16 j
cents. Without him we would have i
been paying 30 cents to-day."
"1 am willing to give Baruph credit [
for pulling it down from 30 to 16 j
cents." said Clark, "but 110 didn't'
pull it down half far enough. Why?
doesn't the Attorney General hop on!
these people. He ought to put every i

Pershing Studies Details

Secretary Baker said he had been!
studying the uestioan of providing
general officers for the large forces'
to be raised. About 150 major gen
erals and brigadier generals must be
appointed within the next few weeks. |
It is believed that Mr. Baker is!
studying the records of officers with-1
out undue regard to seniority. The |
general belief in official circles is:
that a good many young men will be.
appointed general officers. This policy '
is being followed by Great Britain
and France with marked success. It
is recognized that many things about '
the old military system must be
scrapped if the United States is to j
have the highest degree of efficients
on the lighting line in France. Merit
and military genius promise to have:
their reward wherever developed. i

Waite Dies Calmly in
Electric Chair For the
Murder of Wife's Parents
Ossining, N. Y., May 25.—Within
three days of the first anniversary of
his conviction. Dr. Arthur Warren
Waite. a young dentist, wus put to
death in the electric chair in Sing
Sing prison at 11 o'clock last night
for the murder of his wealthy father
in-law, John E. Peck, of Grand
Rapids. Mich. ,
A jury in the Supreme Court of
New York County found Waite guilty
on May 27, 1916, after he had told
how he had anesthetized Mr. Peck
and then smothered him with a pil
low. This was after admitted at
tempts to kill his victim with poison,
suffocation and other methods.
Waite also told the jury that he
had killed Mrs. Peck by inoculating
her with disease germs and then giv
ing her poison. His life was a self
confessed record o ftheft from the
time he was thirteen years old.
HERE'S A "REGULAR FELLER"
Pittsburgh, May 25. Declaring
that her husband, Edward Huffnagel,
a farmer, living near Glenshaw, stays
out sometinfl?s as late as 9 o'clock at
night and often gambles for sums
running as high as fifty cents, Mrs.
Emma Huffnagel asked a divorce in
court here to-day.
The wife says she left her husband
several months ago because he called
on his father every other night, while
she stayed at home alone. Fre
quently her husband would "sit In
a little game among friends." she
said, where fifty cents was generally
the sum total of losses or winnings.
Now she demands a divorce.
NAVY CLASS AHEAD A YEAR
"Washington, May 25. The first
class o fthe Naval Academy will be
graduated June 28, a year ahead of
time, in order to provide additional
officers for the fleet of submarine
chasers. Captain Eberle, command
ant at Annapolis, and the entire fac
ulty of the academy approved the
earlier graduation. There are 203
men in the class and all who pass the
required examination will be com
missioned immediately as ensigns.
They have been doing double work
for some months to prepare for early
graduation.
The class which ordinarily would
have finished in June of this year
was graduated last March.
RELIEF SHIP SUNK

day.

neral services for George G. Plasterer,
who dieil at his home here on Mon
day, were held yesterday. Burial was
made in Cedar Grove cemetery. Mrs.
Milton Uhman, of 410 Crescent street,
Harrisburg, is a daughter.
