BOTH PARTIES HIT BARUCH Designation of Broker to Spend Ten Billion Slirs Condemnation Washington, May 25. Criticism [ of the Administration has come front Democrats as well as from Kepubli cans, because of the report that Ber nard M. Baruch, of New York, has been clothed with authority to spend $10,000,000,000 of American money! without compensation. llepresentative George R. Lunn. of New York, in defense of Baruch, as-1 serted that his connection with the; copper interests of the United States j had made it possible for Baruch to! supply the Government all the cop-; per it needed at 16 cents a pound j when the market price was :!0 cents, j Speaker Champ Clark took a hand in the controversy. "Do you know," he asked Rcpre- j sentative Lunn, "that the Utah Cop per Company made an official report to its board of directors that it could furnish copper on the cars ready lot shipment at cents a pound?" "Well," answered Lunn, "Mr. Ba-, ruch seems to have brought the price' down from 30 cents a pound to 16 j cents. Without him we would have i been paying 30 cents to-day." "1 am willing to give Baruph credit [ for pulling it down from 30 to 16 j cents." said Clark, "but 110 didn't' pull it down half far enough. Why? doesn't the Attorney General hop on! these people. He ought to put every i one of them in jail before Saturday j night." Pershing Studies Details of American Expedition With President Wilson "Washington, May 25. Major j General John J. Pershing, who will j command the division of regular army veterans which is to be sent to 1 France "at tho earliest practicable, moment," called at the White House j >c%.erday and paid his respects to! President Wilson. As commander-in-chief of the' army and navy, Mr. Wilson uudoubt- j edly gave General Persuing linal in- ( structions regarding the part the! American contingent is to play in the j world war. Secretary Baker accompanied the l field commander to the executive; offices. No successor has been appointed! to General Pershing as commander! of the Southern Department. Briga-1 dicr General Parker, as senior officer ' in the department, is acting as com- j mander. Secretary Baker said he had been! studying the uestioan of providing general officers for the large forces' to be raised. About 150 major gen erals and brigadier generals must be appointed within the next few weeks. | It is believed that Mr. Baker is! studying the records of officers with-1 out undue regard to seniority. The | general belief in official circles is: that a good many young men will be. appointed general officers. This policy ' is being followed by Great Britain and France with marked success. It is recognized that many things about ' the old military system must be scrapped if the United States is to j have the highest degree of efficients on the lighting line in France. Merit and military genius promise to have: their reward wherever developed. i . Waite Dies Calmly in Electric Chair For the Murder of Wife's Parents Ossining, N.
