GREAT WAVE OF PROSPERITY HERE War Brings Nation Face to Face With a New . . i Crisis New York, May 18. Different 1 business, but better business for America during the war, was pre-1 dieted to-day by Frank A- Vander lip, banker and member of the la- ■ bor committee of tne Council of Na tional Defense advisory commission. , Mr. Vanderlip said the war will j call for readjustments, but not for ! diminution in volume of business; j that times will be better than ever • before, and that the people should be getting ready for top-speed pro- I duction that will utilize every energy. I "The sooner the public gets over the idea that we want 'business as usual,' or can have 'business as j usual' during this great war the better for all," he said. "We want ; to stop all unnecessary work and unnecessary expenditure short off, and concentrate on the immense vol- j ume of work which has to be done. < Businessmen should get rid of any \ foolish fears that economy will bring I on a general paralysis of industry j or trade. "There is no danger of not hav- j ing work for everybody; the trouble | is that there is more work in sight i than can possibly be done, and the j uestion is whether we shall cut off luxuries or necessities. It is ab- : of the danger of unemployment and to urge that the people shall go on buying what they do not actually j i need in order to keep labor from un- ' employment or to maintain busi- , ness as usual. "How is labor to be had to make uniforms unless it is released from ' making other clothes; how are looms to be had for blankets unless re-: | leased from something else; how is steel to be had for ships, tin cans | and agricultural implements unless other consumption is curtailed; how > I are women to be had tor offices j unless released elsewhere? And, , filially, how are we to put JT.OuO,- I uOO.OOO or *8,000,000,000 of purchas ing power at the disposal of the gov- j I crnment unless we curtail our in- j dividual expenditures? I | "The country should immediately i awake to the fact that it has a great | task in hand, and that it cannot j ' carry on a war like this with one ( hand and continue to do all the busi ness it did before with the other. "Most of the argument against I economy assumes that the people i who economie will hoard their I money. That, of course, would be foolish, but if they lend their sav- l ings to the government it will find 1 its way directly back into circula- t tion in providing for the govern-! ' ment's needs. "These bond issues will necessitate I more taxation in the future than in the past, but the person who prac- I tices self-denial notv in order to buy 1 a bond not only aids the govern- i ment, but provides an offset to fu ture taxation on this account. The ( individual who takes his share of the , bonds will pay his taxes into his own I pocket. r | "Every community should be - closely organized for subscriptions to ' these loans. Once the habit of sav- , ing to buy a bond is established it ( will not be abandoned when the war ( is over, but a million new springs J of wealth will he developed to help " on the development of industry and d the progress of society in the future, i Parents should buy for their chil- 1 dren and employers should join 1 hands with their employes in the j name of a common patriotism and I to bring an end to the world s last ] great war." ; 4 U. S. to Recruit Regiment j of Foresters For France i By Associated Press I Washington, May IS. A forestry regiment, composed of foresters. | woodsmen and others experienced iii lumbering operations, will go to l-"ranee as a unit in the expedition of army engineers now being recruit ed. It will be organized as a vol- ' unteer military force and will assist * the engineers in preparing timber for I construction work. The forest service, at the request I of the War Department, will prepare plans for organization and equipment j i of the regiment and will aid in secur ing suitable men. The step is to be taken at the suggestion of the British 1 war mission, whose members have told officials that similar forces rais- 1 I ed in Canada are rendering valuable service, behind the French front. The duty of the force will be to con vert available timber into material H for bridges, railroads and trenches 1 with the least possible waste. M CENTRAL TROPHY CASE FIND INCREASING £ The committee in charge of the J trophy case fund for Central High C School received a check for Jl3 yes- J terday from the D. S. Society. This ( club is composed of Senior co-eds and is the first school organization to co- i operate in raising the fund. How ever, it is expected that several oth er societies will likewls- "come across" soon. The committee lias se- I cured definite information that the I best trophy case that can be made ! will cost 1225. Therefore, that is I the sum they desire to raise, as they believe that a case of that sort only I would be worthy to present to old Harrisburg High. The Centralian So- J ciety is managing the campaign and paying all expenses. • FOR AN ACHING HEAD Take Horaford's Add I'hoaphatr Healthful, and most agreeable to i taste.
