P., product Mileage Determined by Lightness and Flexibility How far a cAr goes on a set of tires is a question of first importance to the motorist. To answer it for their prod uct, the Franklin Automobile Com pany, lias just completed a compila tion of averages taken frohi reports re ceived from owners in all parts of the country. The rough going of the west ern mountain ranges and the scorch ing travel through the desert regions of the West are intermingled with records over the macadam highways of the East as well as the tough sand and mud roads of the South. The records cover the period begin ning with 1912 and ending with Jan uary, 1917, five years. The grand average for these five years is 10,203 : miles per set of tires. The Franklin designers explain this ! extraordinary mileage briefly, viz.: I scientific light weight plus flexible con struction. The Franklin is widely noted for its lightness, the touring car tipping the beam at 2250 pounds, with other mod- I els proportionately light. This light-] ness makes possible a flexible, resilient! type of construction, for light parts can be allowed much freedom of movement without danger from rack ing and straining. Another -interesting result of light weight construction on tire wear is brought ot l by a well-known inde pendent motor authority, who made an investigation of the load tires are made to ccrry. He says: "I found that what was ordinary tire equipment: on some 60 per cent, of the leading cars gave a load per cubic inch of tire volume of between 5 and C pounds. The Franklin showed the lowest weight per cubic inch of tire volume, .395 pounds." This lightness in weight relieves the tires of destructive load, and the re siliency softens the blow on the tires. The remarkably long life of tires is not the only result. Punctures are rare and blowouts practically unheard of. New Super-Six Speedster Joins Noted Hudson Family I "There has been a new birthday in the famous family of the Hudson j Super-Sixes," said L. H. Hagerling | "The new Hudson Four Passenger 1 Speedster for which the youthful ele ! in en t has watched impatiently since lit was first announced has at last been put oil the niurket. "It's a clubby sport motor of un matched beauty and striking design, , the most spirited in appearance of j any chum car you will see on the i roads during 1917. "Its lines bespeak the fleetness and j tremendous power which its Super j Six motor guarantees. This stock I Super-Six motor in a stock chassis has made a speed of 102.5.1 miles an nour. • It has driven 1819 miles in 24 hours, i breaking all records by 52 per, cent. Twice it has broken the transcon | tinental record in one continuous trip lof 7,000 miles. It is singularly the j motor f6r a powerful speed car, equal i to any emergency, quick on the pick up and indefatigable for ranging far and fast with the utmost security. "Owing to the great demand in all oflr other styles the factory is able to build only a limited number of ' Speedsters this year. Many orders ! have already been placed ahead by motorists, who know the Hudson prod uct. "The Speedster is finished in Cobalt ■ blue with vermilion wheels, and the beveled body edges are finished in black. The wheels are 32x4Inches. The body is loV; the seats are design | ed for lounging comfortably. "I am confident that the demand for this car will be so great that the ] factory will be unable to keep up with orders, and as I'am desirous of seeing it well represented in Harrisburg, I advise those who are seeking a dis ; ti/ictive open motor to by all means i see the Hudson Super-Six Speedster at an early date." GUARDS SHOUT TWO By Associated Press i Trenton, N. J., April 7. Two men, wl)o were said to be acting suspicious i ly, were shot and wounded here early ; to-day by National Guardsmen on duty [along the Pennsylvania Hail road here. KXRKZ&BURG TELEGRAPH Sedan Makes an Ideal Car For Spring Touring Some of the advantages of the Over land five passenger sedan, pointed out by Carl E. Hansen, of the Overland- Harrisburg Co.: (1) a' front seat that can be raised nmking entrancA and exit easier: (2) a door wide en ough to permit the passage .of the largest hat, a convenience that mi lady can readily appreciate; (.3) win dows that can be lowered at a mo ment's notice. Unusual activity in the convertible body type is reported by Carl Hansen, of the Overland Marrlsburg Company. The first hint of spring, he declares, has brought forth many inquiries con cerning the new types of Willys-Over land closed cars. The Willys-Overland Company, in its 1917 comprehensive line of motor cars, included this new popular type in four models, the Overland Big Four and Light Six live-passenger Sedan and the Big Four and Light Six three passenger coupe. In addition it also o/Ters a sedan and coupe on Willys- Knight four chasses. All of these are equipped with convertible bodies which can be quickly transformed from luxurious closed cars to airy, open touring cars, with permanent roof. "The first signs of spring make the average motorist eager to get out in fhe country, .Motorists arc planning at this time of the year on short trip's into the country, week-end jaunts and more extensive tours. "But heretofore there has been one great disadvantage in spring driving. That has been the uncertainty of the weather. A beautiful forenpon might develop into a nasty, disagreeable afternoon. "Here's where the convertible car shows to advantage. "We will assume the forenoon is delightful—arm and sunny. The tour ists lower the side windows and make the jaunt into the country in an open tour car. "Suddenly a shower comes up. Up g<i the windows in a trice, and at their disposal is a snug and dry closed car. No hurry, no confusion, no Happing curtains to snap into place. "Then the clouds break away, the windows ure lowered once more, the automobile again becomes an open touring car. "Now you can readily see why our closed car models are exceedingly popular at this season of the year."
