16 BIG IMPROVEMENT IN N. SECOND ST. Remodeling Houses to Convert Them Into Apartments and Storeroom Remodeling work on the two big brick dwelling houses at 1435-1437 North Second street, to convert them Into apartments with a large store room on the first floor, has been start ed by Harold A. Hippie, contractor for the owners, Lester U. Holtzman and Harvey B. Bair. The total cost of Improvements will be at least $25,000. All alterations and remodeling will be completed within tlie next four months, so that the build ing will be ready for occupancy early In the summer. The owners are planning to use the entire first floor ot the iwo buildings as a large produce and meat market. The floor will be entirely of concrite. An artesian well will be drilled. Other improvements include a large ice and storage plant. When opened the store will add an other business interest to the fast growing uptown section and will be another convenience for residents in that district. Two of the four apartments, which are to be 011 the second and third lloors, have already been let, and it is expected when improvements are completed all apartments in the building will be taken. J. F. Barnhart, superintendent of Mr. Hippie's work, has a force of men at work tearing out some of the interior walls in the houses, so that improve ments can be started as soon as pos sibie. Rex Garage Will be Greatly Improved The incorporation of the Ilex Garage and Supply Company signifies exten sive alterations to front of the build ing and the opining of an accessory de partment and the distributing agency for motorcars. The building has a ca pacity of 150 cars. A glass front will be constructed which will add addl xional room between the present wall and the walk. This will permit a store room for a complete line of tires and accessories. Watchman and car wash ers will be on duty all night, and a re pair department will be maintained. Cars will be delivered and called for without additional charge. The entire buildling will be repainted to make this substantial building as attractive as possible. The officers are as follows: A. G. John Yates, of the society, will distribute the "spuds" to the poor families about the city. HELD AS SPIES New York, March 3. Participation in an elaborate spy plot organization to send men to Great Britain under guise of being American newspaper correspondents, but whose real purpose was to serve as spies and supply' Ge rmany with forbidden information as to civil and militarv conditions in Ens land, was charged against Albert A. Sander, Carl W. Wunnenberg and George Vaux Bacon in indictments found here yesterday by the Federal grand Jury. CONGRESSMAN AGAIN' WILL. FI.Y TO N ATION 1, CAPITAL Philadelphia. March 3. Beginning his second trip to Washington, D. C., by airplane. Congressman O. D. Bleak ley, of Franklin, Pa., will start from league Island Park to-morrow or Monday. Japan Ridicules Idea of Warring on America By Associated Press Tokio, March 3.—Japan has re ceived no proposition from either Mex ico or Germany directly or indirectly lo join in a possible war against the United States, Viscount Montono Japa nese Foreign Minister, informed the Associated Press yesterday. Viscount Motono said he considered such an idea ridiculous, it being based on the outrageous presumption that Japan would abandon her allies. If Mexico received the proposal. Viscount Motono added, that country showed in telligence in not transmitting it to Japan. DEMOCRATS LOSE VOTE Washington, D. C„ March 3.—Rep resentative Michael F. Conry, of New York City, a Democratic member of Congress for four terms and re-elected for a fifth, died at a hospital here yes terday after a long illness from kiduey trouble. He was 47 years old. in spite of his failing health he had been at the Capitol quit" regularly until last week, and as a :i, ruber of the Ways and Means Committee bid worked hard in connection with 1)1 framing of the revenue bill and o;iicr legisla tion. BEEKEEPERS ELECT The State Beekeepers elected the following oflicers: President, Dr. 11. A. Surface, Mechanicsburg, re-elected; vice-presidents, G. 11. Rea, Keynolds ville; J. R. Rainbo, Collingwood; A. F. Strittmatter, Ebensburg; secretary and treasurer, H. C. Klinger, Liver pool; representatives to Agricultural Federation, E. A. Weimer, Lebanon; H. A. Surface, Mechanicsburg; H. C. Klinger, Liverpool. The closing speak ers included Dr. E. F. Phillips, of the Department of Agriculture, Washing ton; E. G. J By Associated Press Washington, D. C., March 3.—Con gress adjourns to-morrow with the control of the next House still in dis pute. As the result of the death of Rep resentative Conry, of New York, the Republicans appear to have the lead. They now have 215 votes assured, it is conceded, while the Democrats have 214. Reports also have reached here that three newly-elected Democrats are seriously ill. No successor to Mr. Conry will be elected before next No vember, it is believed. Five members of the incoming Congress are classed as "independ ents." Hence, if a special session of Congress is called before next Decem ber. it will be apparent that the Re publicans will have the advantage. As a majority of the membership of the House, 21S members, are necessary to the selection of a speaker, however, the Democrats are not without hope. How serious a defection in the Democratic ranks over prohibition leg islation will affect the proposed or ganization of the House is causing Democrats some concern. About a dozen "wet" Northern Democrats have split with the Southern "dry" leaders and yesterday they showed their inde pendency by defeating a judiciary bill greatly desired by Southern Demo crats. Both sides are threatening re taliation in the way of committee as signments if the Democrats organize the next House. Democratic leaders hope, however, to effect a truce before a vote on the speakership comes. SHOT BOARDING TRAIN Williamsport, Pa., March ~3. GET READY TO ARM AMERICAN SHIPS St. Louis to Be First to Leave With Protecting Guns on Deck By Associated Press New York, March 3. —The six pas senger ships of the American Line held In this harbor by the German block ade are ready to take on guns as soon as Congress authorizes the govern ment to arm American merchant ves sels. A naval constructor and two ordnance officers from the navy yard continued to-day an inspection of the -' merican Line ships. These officers yesterday spent the greater part of the day on board the St. Ix>uis, which, it is understood, will be the first of the American fleet to leave if the ship arming bill becomes a law. It was said that the liners could be made ready fo rif necessary in 4 8 hours, so far as the installation of guns is concerned. Inquiries by oflicers at the navy yard regarding the caliber of guns now car ried by French and British steam ships for submarine defense show that the French liners are armed with naval 7 5 millimeters, a little more than 3 inches; the Cunarders carry 4.7's and the White Star liners 6-inch guns.
