MILLERSBURG BRIDGE MOVE IS GIVEN BIG BOOS DINNER OF LIVE MOTOR CLUB Xot,ed Speakers Tell Upper Enders of Good Roads Projects and Problems; Unique Decorations a Feature; Delicious Turkey Served by Ladies of the Town; Speakers' Table in Form of Bridge Millersburg, Pa.. Feb. 28.—The Mil lersburg Motor Club, one of the most aggressive and progressive organiza tions of its kind in all Central Penn sylvania, entertained a party of dis tinguished legislators and guests at its annual dinner last evening and im pressed upon them very strongly tho urgent necessity of a State-built bridge over the Susquehanna at that point. From the time the party entered the large Masonic hall until they departed there was not a moment when it was not made perfectly plain that the sub ject of the bridge is uppermost in the minds of upper end folks and that •it is a vital necessity to the growth I of that section. The turkey dinner was prepared by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Motor Club, under the direction of Francis H. Hoy, of Harrisburg, as caterer, and served by the members, under the leadership of Mrs. J. W. Hoffman, head of the auxiliary. Speaker Richard J. Bald win, in facilitating the ladies upon its excellence, said that some of the legis lators at Harrisburg had expressed the belief that large amounts of foodstuffs were being hoarded up in the rural districts, that this he believed was true and that all the good things in the State must have been hidden away \ in Millersburg, especially for the mo-i tor club banquet. The affair was arranged by H. W. Bowman, president of the club and! one of the greatest boosters for good l oads in the upper end, assisted by I the following committee ' of arrange-j merits: I-I. M. Fairchild, chairman; S. N. Kawel, the Rev. W. C. Skeath, A. i G. Bashore and James E. Lentz. i Unique Decorations The decorations were white and blue bunting and the room was lighted by long strips of red, white and blue elec tric lights. An odd and attractive fea ture was the speakers' table. In front of it. across the entire width of the WHY Head Ache? Above the level was erected the super structure of such a bridge as the Motor Club would have erected over the river at the points named. At one end on an electrically-lighted column was the word "Perry," and at the other end "Dauphin." The decorations, which were in charge of E. D. Butz, chanr man; Samuel Krause and Guy B. lieckert, committee, came in for much favorable comment, as did the music rendered by the uniformed boys' bri gade band, which played behind a lattice screen at the end of the large hall. Well-lvnown Speakers The Rev. Mr. Skeath, toastmaster, was introduced by Chairman Fair child, and the Rev. J. H. Musselnian made the opening prayer. Among the speakers were Richard J. NICODEMUS This morning First Lieutenant Ed win A. Nicodemus, of the Troop C, First Pennsylvania Cavalry (the Gov ernor's Troop), received notification from the Adjutant General's office that he had been promoted to captain in the quartermaster's department and assigned as aid-de-camp on the staff of General C. M. Clements, commander of the Pennsylvania Division of the National Guard. The promotion dates from to-day. Lieutenant Nicodemus served as an aid to General Clements during the entire tour of duty at Camp Stewart,' El Paso, Texas, for the past seven months. Captain Nicodemus has had twenty six years' service In the Governor's Troop, having enlisted in 1891. He was appointed troop surgeon, with the rank of first lieutenant, August 1, 1901, and served in that position until May 28, 1910, when he was elected lirst lieutenant of the troop. .Captain Nicodemus is an expert rifle shot and competent instructor in small arms practice. For many.years he has been rangemaster at the target range on Major Frederick M. Ott's farm at Rockville, where the members of the Governor's Troop and Companies D and I of the Eighth regiment prac ticed during the summer rifle season. CROWDED CARS ARE RULED UPON In ordering Improvements to the car service of the Schuylkill Railways Company in the complaint made against it by the borough of Shenan doah, Public Service Commissioner Milton J. Brecht says: "No system of railway operation has yet been found elastic enough to have always a proper and sufficient number of cars at the various points of emergency in the service so as to be able to give every passenger a seat." The commissioner adds; "This in ability to provide for special and un expected crowds on a few hours' no tice does not warrant a railway com pany to neglect the obligation which it has assumed to furnish adequate and convenient service to its regular patrons who come and go dally un less, as In some of our largest cities, traffic conditions are too congested to permit the installation of such serv ice. In the situation presented at Shen andoah there is no reason appearing why adequate car service should not be provided in the morning to carry the miners and other workmen to their places of employment and on Satur days to lake care of the general traf fic. The segregation of the miners by operating special cars or re serving a compartment in cars as sug gested by complainant would not work out very well in practice." Miners are entitled to the same privileges as any other passenger and while some min ers are favorable to such a plan, says the opinion, the commission has "been unable to find nor does It have knowl edge at present of any method by which that end can be attained in a satisfactory manner." The company is directed lo change its service, to install new steps, etc., rehang fenders, replace stoves by more modern methods of heating, and to have conductors pay attention to ven tilation and sanitary condition of cars. j GORGAS' j Thursday, Friday & Saturday • March 1, 2 and 3 ■ 1 P'PWT will buy anyarticle mentioned in this advertisement regardless of its retail value, X i providing a second article of the same kind is purchased at the regular price. ! gjj OPEKQ FENWAY CHOCOLATES 1 „ OPEKO TEA I fifflfffi S COFFEE Fresh, Delicious.
