HOLLER, Clerk. 3HAHRISBTJRG TETJX3RXPH REAL RELIGION FOUND IN TAGORE Buddhist Poet Understands Fullness of Life, Its Beauty and Perfection By ELLA WHEELER WILCOX Copyright. 1915, Star Company. Alfred Bernhard Xobel, a Swedish Qhemist and physicist. was born in Stockholm in IStiii and died in Italy in 1896. Nobel let't his fortune of $9,£00,000 to found a prize fund, the annual interest of which was to be divided into Ave equal parts (each amounting to about $40.00b. the sum available) to me distributed every year to the persons who, during the year, had done best in (1) physical science; (2) chemistry; (3) physiology or med icine; (4) idealistic literature, and (5) the advancement of universal peace; in 1906, the prize was awarded Presi dent Roosevelt for his initiative in tho peace between Russia and Japan. In 1913 the prize was awarded to Rabindranth Tagore. the Bengali poet, whoso works, both in prose and verse, rank among the great classics. Tagore wrote his poems in Bengali and trans lated them into Knglish. The father of the poet was one of India's great spiritual leaders and was decorated by the people with the title of Maharshi (great sage). Rabindranth was the youngest son and began writing poetry at eleven years of age. He lived the life of a high-born youth of romantic tempera ment, until suddenly the "Divine Be loved" revealed Himself to the young man. In his own words he says "A veil was suddenly drawn and every thing . I saw became luminous. The whole scene was one perfect music, one marvelous rhythm." Songs Have I/eft Indelible Mark on the Life of His Nation It brought to the poet the fullness of life in its beauty and perfection which he had endeavored tb give to the world in his lyrics. As a part of Indian na tionalism, it is believed that his na tional songs have made such an indeli ble mark on the life of the nation that their influence will be felt as long $s the name of India endures. ' Tagore devoted his Nobel prize money to the development of a model school at Bolpur. Here is an ex quisite little fragrant from one of Ta gore's poems: Infinite wealth is not yours, my pa tient and dusky mother dust! You toil to fill the mouths of your children, but food is scarco. "The gift of gladness that you have for us is never perfect. "Tho toys that you make for your children are fragile. "Tou cannot satisfy all our hungry hopes, but should I desert you for that? "Tour smile whicfr Is shadowed with pain is sweet to my eyes. "Tour love which knows not fulfil ment is dear to my heart. "From your breast you have fed us with life, but not Immortality, that is why your eyes are ever wakeful. "For ages you are working with color and song, yet your heaven is not built, but only its sad sugges tion. "Over your creations of beauty there is the mist of tears. I will pour my songs into your mute heart, and my love into your love. ; I will worship you with labor. "I have seen your tender face and I love your mournful dust, Mother Earth." And here are two more: "In the world's audience hall, the simple blade of grass sits on the • same carpet with the sunbeam and the stars of midnight. Thus my songs share their seats in the heart of the world with the music of the clouds and forests. But, you man of riches, your wealth has no part in the simple gran deur of the sun's glad gold and the mellow gleam of the rising moon. "The blessing of the all-embracing sky is not shed upon it. "And when death appears, it pales and withers and crumbles into dust." At midnight the would-be escetic announced: This is the time to give up mv home and seek for God. Ah. who has held me so long in delusion here'' God whispered, 'l,' but the ears of the man were stopped. s "With a baby asleep at her "breast lay his wife, peacefully sleeping on one side of the bed. "The man said, 'Who are ye that have fooled me so long? "The voice said again, 'They are God,' but he heard it not. "The baby cried out in its dream, nestling close to its mother. "God commanded, 'Stop, fool, leave not thy home,' but still he heard not. "God sighed and complained, "Why does my servant wander to seek ing me, forcaking me?'" • •••*• Now, in view of ail this interesting history and work of a great man so recognized by the whole world, the following press clipping from a Min nesota paper requires but little com ment: "Prayers by all Christendom for the conversion of Rabindranth Tagore, the Hindu poet and winner of the Nobel prize for literature, were urged here by the Rev. E. C. Horn, of Trinity Methodist Church, at the Methodist ministers' weekly meeting to-day at the Y. W. C. A. "It is a marvel that the Hindu re ligion, the worst of all religions of which I know anything, could produce isueh a man." said Mr. Horn. "It was announced that "Billy" Sun day will come to Minneapolis." The Messengor, theosophical maga zine, says: "Hinduism .has produced its Tagore, Christianity its "Billy" Sunday—a cane of cause and effect which speaks for Itself." It is well-nigh incredible that in this enlightened ago and progressive hour of thought so medieval a state of mind can exist as in the case of the Rev. E. C. Horn. Christianity is not helped by such utterances. The Methodist Church is not helped. \ Go<| save the world if such great souls as Tagore are all to be "converted" and merged into "the title end of the Horn" ot Methodism. Elevation or Whole Race Can Only Be Attained by Toleration Henry Biroth privately printed and published in 1913 a very interesting book with the Interesting title "Toler auci In Religion." which can be rec ommended to the Rev. Mr. Horn. Its foreword says: "An elevation of the whole race to a higher social condi tion ca nonly bo attained by religious toleration." Again it says: _"There are people who from mere ignorance of the an cient religions of mankind have adopted a doctrino moro un-Chrlstian than any that could be fonnd In the pages of religious books of antiquity— namely, that all the nations of the FEBRUARY 2, 1917. earth before the rise of Christianity were mere outcasts, forsaken and for gotten of their Father in Heaven, without a knowledge of God or a hope of salvation. Bigotry und its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long pos sessed this beautiful earth. It has filled it with violence, drenched It with human blood, destroyed civiliza tion and sent whole nations to de spair." If there Is ever to be a universal religion, it must be one which will bo inlinite, like the Uod it will preach, whose sun shines upon the followers of Christian or Christ alike; which will not be Brahmin or Buddhist, Christian or Mohammedan, but the sum total of all these, and still have inlinite place for development. It will bo a religion that will have no place for persecution or intolerance in its polity, which will recognize a divinity In every man or woman, and whoso whole force will be centered in aiding humanity to its divine nature. Dies Hour Too Soon; Heirs Lose $5,000 Boston, Mass., Jan. 26.—Had Karl W. Beaf, of Qulncy, lived but an hour longer ho would have been paid the first premium on a life insurance policy of $6,000, which was all made out, and which a messenger was about to take to his house. The premium would then have been paid and hla family would havo re- ceived this amount, which the com pany now refuses to pay on the ground that the transaction was not completed. Beat's death occurred on December 12, 1915, immediately after he toolc a dose of a laxative salt such as h had been using for some time. The belated inquest on the death has been held before Judge Avery of the Qulncy District Court. STOPTHEADAC¥ET PAIN, NEURALGIA Don't suffer! Get a dime package of Dr. James* Headache Powders.
