The two Eng lish actors who wrote it found a new variation of the species, when they made the detective an old, retired and somewhat broken criminal lawyer, sud denly stirred into the exercise of his old shrewdness and persistence by an incident happening in his house. The keen Interest, however, of play and performance lays in Mr. Maude's im personation of the old lawyer that fused his irritability and affection, his resolution and helplessness, his shrewdness and somnolence, his quick energy and tired reaction, anil twenty little traits and whimsies into a living, vivid and altogether plausible being of the theater. The impersonation is act ing worth seeing. Mr. Holmes will give "La Belle France" at the Orpheuin Theater on Monday evening, at 8:15 o'clock. There is a charming little lady on the Mojestic's bill that appeals to music lovers. One of the comedy hits of tile bill is the Herbert-Germaine Trio, in comedy acrobatic stunts. Two of the men introduce some, difficult feat's, while the third keeps the audience in uproarious laughter with his funny antics. Three other standard acts com plete the vaudeville list. The feature attraction the last half of the week is George Evans' Honey Boys, in an ex cellent minstrel act. Surrounding this act are; Helen and Rice, in their laugh able comedy skit, "Eggs;" Gertrude McGill and company, presenting a pleasing comedy sketch; Fern and Davis young couple, in an excellent comedy singing, talking and dancing skit entitled. Why Marriage Is a Failure Is Found Out my a Woman Kansas City, Dec. 15.—The investi gations of Miss Tiera Farrow, Kansas City's first woman divorce proctor, have brought to her the conclusion that neither the affinity the, mother in-law, nor the corner saloon plays the most potent part in causing un happy homes. The trouble, she be lieves, is to be found rather in a false ideal of married life. In her inquiry she has found: That because girls dream of movie heroes with curly hair and caressing eyes as husbands, they decide mar riage is a failure when their plumber carpenter sponses are commonplace. That becauso the ideal of married life as a rose garden of love, gleaned from novels, does not come true, the young wife grows discontented and fails to make a success of her job as a homemaker. "Of course the fault is not all on the part of the woman," said Miss Farow. "In perhaps a greater num ber of instances the men are at fault. But there would 6e many more suc cessful marriages if girls were brought up with more of the material istic and less of the romantic idea. "I see so many disappointed girl wives who had believed that mar riage had meant a sort of Utopian state in which there was no sorrow or drudgery. Men seldom have this Illusion, but too often they shirk their marriage responsibilities." WHRKT.OCK LEADS BAND Hagerstown, Md., Dec. 13. James R.
