DRYS OF NATION TO FIGHT LIQUOR Prohibition and Temperance Leaders in Washington Plan ing Country-Wide Campaign Washington, Dec. ,7. Leaders of prohibition and temperance organiza tions gathered here to-day for a series of conferences to plan co-operation in a tight for nation-wide prohibition and bills to bar liquor advertisements from the mails and to make the District of Columbia dry. Defense Takes Up Its Side in Teiper Trial Buffalo. N. Y„ Dec. 7. The people's case against John Edward Teiper on M charge of murdering his mother, Mrs. Agnes M. Teiner, closed to-day and Roeer p. Clark, of Binghamton, asso ciated with Edward H. O'Malley and George A. Lewis for the defense, made the opening address to the jury on be half of the accused. Whether Teiper would take the stand in ins own behalf would be determined by the develooments of the day, it was said by his counsel. Teiper Is reported to have expressed a wish to testify. I believe they might easily be ready for an adjustment on the assumption of the situation be fore the war in other words, on even terms. Meanwhile Alexander left. • Yesterday Alexander sent a mes senger to the same drug store with the same prescription. The druggist i notified the police. Hypodermic needles and a prescrip tion for twenty more pills were found on his person. The second prescrip tion also bears Dr. Ewing's name and it is claimed that it is also a forgery. C. W. DECEMBER 7, 1916. $150,000,000 IN LOANS ASKED FOR 50,000 Farmers Have Already Applied For 17 Times Amount New Banks Will Have Washington, Dec. 7. Officials of the farm local board announced to day that more than 50,000 farmers have applied for mortgage loans ag gregating approximately $150,000,000, or more than 17 times the amount of which will be immediately available for loans upon the organization of the 12 farm loan banks. Host of the applications have come from the South and West. They still continue to come in by the hundreds every day. Requests for 2,000 appli cation blanks, contemplating requests for loans to 2,000 farmers have come from lowa alone. Old Wilmingtton Town Hall Built in 1796 Is Sold Wilmington, Del., Dec. 7.—The city council this morning sold at public auction the old town hall, erected In 1790 and no longer used for public purposes since the completion of the new public building. The hall was sold with other pieces of property owned by the city, the entire lot bring ing $175,000.
