HIGH DIVING COST CTCT nY GRAFTING TOMATO AND POTATO State College, Pa.. Oct. 13.—Eleven fully matured tomatoes and as many lifeslzed potatoes growing on a single plant in the vegetable gardens of the Pennsylvania State College marks the advent of the newest of freak plants in the vegetable world. If further experimentation proves Its commer cial value, the latest creation in plant life is expected to revolutionize vege table growing by combining economy of space In the vegetable grower's garden with efficiency in plant growth. The experiment was conceived and j carried to completion by C. E. Myers, I arofessor of experimental vegetable growing at the college. A potato was planted and on the stalk produced there was grafted a young tomato shoot. The union was protected with wax and bound with raffia, exactly ns Is done In the ordinary grafting ot fruit trees. A luxuriant growth of vine resulted. On the vine there were many tomato blossoms, and these developed Into normal tomatoes. Un derground, at the same time, the pota toes thrived as if they were growing under the stimulus of tholr own tops. STORM SWEEPS SCOTLAND London, Oct. 13.
