July 14.—A muni cipal parade will be one of the fea tures of the convention of the League of Third Class Cities which meets here August 29, 30 and 31. This pageant was discussed at a meetiuy ft the city FRIDAY EVENING, l council and committees. The financial i program of the convention will be • drafted soon. (Correspond ence of The Associated Press) The great annual Austrian Derby, the ban ner race of the sporting season for all Austria-Hungary, this year proved even more than the anticipated suc cess. It far outdid the Derby of 1915, in general interest, attendance and sporting features. Many of the big figures in society and the smart and brilliant gowns of peace-time were lacking, but the threatening weather %vas largely to i blame for that. The Austrian race track crowd is totally unlike the one-time American | crowd. The nerve-tucked excitement 1 of the American track is lacking, and [when the horses come thundering HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH I down the track—from right to left in-' ' stead of from left to right and on sod I ; i instead of solid earth —there are sel dom any shouts for tnis or that horse. A feature of the Austrian track is the surprising number of women who bet on the races. Thousands of them crowded to the pari-mutuel booths on Derby day, feverishy thrusting their ten and twenty crown bills to the cashiers, and jostlingly making their way after each race to the pay-off booths. The women too furnished a ! sight that is not common on an Ameri can track, for'countless numbers of them strolled about the paddock, or ' leaned against the rail smoking cigar et after cigaret. They stood about 1 the huge announcing -ooard with cig i 1 aretes between their lfps, program in ' hand, carefully and skilfully checking I off the numbers of the horses to run ; lin the next race and the names of the jockeys who were to ride them, j The only signs of war, if they would I strike even the outsider, were the wray uniforms of officers and soldiers who mingled with the crowd. The most popular favorite did not win, so there was a sorrowful element In the homeward-bound crowd, but on i the whole it was a happy and cartfree throng, certainly one that gave no hint that fathers and brothers, hus bands and sons are spread out along several hundreds miles of battle line, or wounded in the nospltals, or dead and buried. HEAR YPRES GUNS IN LONDON ) London, July 14.—The sound of the I big guns at Ypres has been heard on rare occasions in various parts of L >n don, occasionally at a point in county 150 milos away and repeatedly at points in this country 125 miles. ! 1 from the scene of firing, according to 1 JULY 14, 1916. Miller Christy, a widely known mem'- ber of the Royal Meteorological So ciety. The speaker said that windows in the Temple, a huge building of law offices almost in the heart of the city, were rattled violently many times by the Ypres guns. Lloyd George, minis ter of munitions, and Sir A. Canon Doyle, the speaker added, were among those who had heard the sounds. PLAY MOUTH ORGAN'S IX FIGHT London, July 14.—Two Scotch sol diers, who "at a critical moment steadied the men by getting up on the parapet of a trench and playing mouth organs while exposed to heavy Are," have been given the distinguished con duct medal. They are Company Quar termaster-Sergernt E. S, Beech and Lance Corporal Vlckery, of the Sev enth Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. 5 FORSALE FINE HOMES Fourth and Emerald streets; sample house open day and night. Third street car line.
