PROFIT TAKING CAUSES SETBACK Active Stocks Suffer; Demand For Rails Broad; Spe cialties Strong By Associated Press New York, June 12.—The tempta | tion to take profits caused a temporary ! setback of a point or more in such ac tive stocks as Reading, St. Paul, Bald win Locomotive and Mexican Pe- I troleum, but original gains were aug mented by a fresh buying movement. Demand of rails, including New York Central, in which a single block ?u l*"®" shares changed hands, was the broadest for some weeks, Canadian Pacific and New Haven constituting the other very strong features of this part of the list. Various specialties improved more moderately over initial quotations but coppers were back ward. Before midday trading slackened perceptibly but all prices were main tained. Bonds were firm. LAMBERT, i 13 MARY, THE SHOE SLICER, IN COURT Has New Way of Getting the Very Latest Thing in Footwear One way to obtain a supply of latest style shoes and possibly a little money on the side was explained at the open ing of June quarter sessions to-day when pretty Mary Soper was placed on trial on three charges of larceny. Mary, it is charged, called at Bow man & Co.'s store, got a pair of shoes, went out on the street, carefully slit one of them, went back to the store and indignantly demanded a new pair, de claring that her "new shoes had split the first time she put 'em on." ' She got a brand-new, up-to-date pair. A similar stunt was tried out at Dives, Pomeroy &- Stewart's with similar re sults, and an attempt at D. L. Kauf man's underselling stores nctied not brand-new pair of shoes, but $2.50 in cash. While Judge McCarrell heard the Soper case, President Judge Kunkel started the trial of Harry F. Hough ton, charged with assault and battery. Houghton, it appeared, ran into John Kreider with his automobile. Robert Morgan, a negro boy, who has spent some time at Glen Mills, was sent on to Huntingdon Reform atory on a charge of stealing a satchel of clothes, while the case against T. W. Dill, charged with larceny as bailee, was dismissed. Martin L. Bowman, Fifth ward, city, was appointed foreman of the grand jury. The grand jury, incidentally, ignored but two bills this morning. These were against Russel Madet, charged with larceny. Petit jurors excused from service included the following: The Rev. J. S. Armentrout, William K. Benner, H. L. Carl, Clark Cooper, the Rev. August C. Forscht and the Rev. Peter S. Huegel and Pr. J. L.
