LONDON IN GRAVE MOOD By Associated Press London, Jan. I.—Owing to the drink restrictions and the apprehension con cerning air raids, rather than to any lack of confidence in victory in the war, however long it may be, London celebrated New Year's Eve in a much graver mood than customary. FOR SALE T I * First Nationalßank ? 224 MARKET STREET, -! Harrisburg, Pa. i> ~ Penna. State Tax Stamps > BRITISH LINER SUNK; U. S. CONSUL ABOARD [Continued From First Pa«o,] cember 24 the French liner Ville de la Clotat was sent to the bottom off the lslund of Crete by a submarine which, according to unofficial Brltisft ad vices flew the Austrian flag. No advices have been received in New York as to the date on which the Persia sailed from London. Bhe departed some time in advance of her advertised date of sailing, which was January 15. The voyage from Lon don to Malta ordinarily requires 9 days. The Persia was built in 1900 at Greenock. She had been in the Bom bay service since that time. On account of the danger from sub marines to vessels which pass through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean this route has been abandoned by the Japan Mail Steamship Company which is dispatching its steamships around the Cape of Good Hope. In surance rates for vessels passing through the Suez have been increased by English underwriters to three or four times the normal figure. Lord Charles Montagu, who book ed passage on the Persia, is a Lon don stock broker. He was born in 1860 and served with the Yoemanry cavalry. | Fear Sinking Will Complicate Situation By Associated Press Washington, D. C., Jan. 1. No word of the sinking of the Persia had come to State Department officials early to-day through regular diplo matic channels. Officials who were not away for the holiday viewed the news with some anxiety, fearing the sinking of the British liner might complicate the already delicate sub marine situation. Robert N. McNeely was making his first trip to a consular post for the United States government, having been appointed October 18 last and assigned to Aden. His home is at Monroe, N. C., and he was a mem ber of the North Carolina Legislature from 1908 to 1910. He is 32 years old. v I"Torpedoed and Nearly All Perished" L Report By Associated Press Washington, D. C., Jan. I.—Offi cial dispatches from London to-day said the liner Persia was torpedoed and sunk "while approaching Alex andria," and that "nearly all perish ed." The dispatch came from Con sul General Skinner, at London, and probably was based on the British Admiralty report. It follows: "P. and O. liner Persia reported sunk, submarined, while approaching Alexandria. Robert N. McNeely, American consul, Aden, going to posl, left London as passenger. Nearly all on board perished." Watson and Cooper Lease Entire Building in Which They Started Business Watson & Cooper, who last March opened a men's clothing store at 14 North Third street, yesterday com pleted negotiations for the purchase of a long term lease to the entire building, the first floor of which they now occupy. The rapidly growing business of this young firm made larger quarters necessary, and the purchase of the ! lease to the entire building followed, in ..order that the upper floors might be remodeled and utilized in the con duct of the business. Early this year it is the plan oC the firm to begin alteration work, which will involve the complete re modeling of the second and third floors to fit the needs of the business and the installation of a new store front. Both members of the firm, Charles J. Watson and Moe L. Cooper are progressive young businessmen, werl known in local commercial and civic circles.
