GAIN FOR BETTER
Speculative Favorites Improve;
Bethlehem Steel Drops
17 Points
New York, Dec. 17.—The market
manifested a decided tendency at to
day's opening; to make up some of
the ground lost in yesterday's late sell
ing movement, although prices were
somewhat irregular. Baldwin Loco
motive rose 3 to 116 and Studebaker,
Crucible Steel, Texas Company and
Mexican Petroleum were higher by
I to 3 points. United States Steel,
Anaconda and other speculative fav
orites improvod, Initial dealings in
Steel comprising individual lots of
1000 and 2500 shares.
Anglo-French bonds advanced to
95%, later yielding one-half a point.
Mercantile Marine preferred was the
conspicuous feature of the dull lirst
hour, advancing 3 points from its
opening price of 70, with Steel next in
activity. Petroleum and war and
semiw&r shares trailed along In the
regular order, while Erie was the
most prominent railway issue, showing
some heaviness with Canadian Pacific.
General Motors broke 10 to 15 points
between sales to 475, an over-night
loss of 38 points and 83 points under
its recent record price. Bethlehem
Steel lost 17 to 4 65. Trading dwind
ling to slender proportions before
noon. Large lots of Anglo-French 5s
were offered at 94%. Bonds were
