A Number of Men Receive
j Same Numbers They Hold
in Years Gone By
Applications for automobile regis
trations for 1916 filed at the State
Highway Department thus far have
broken all records and a statement
issued to-day at the department shows
! that six times as many are on (lie now
l'or the new year as were filed at this
time last year. The assignment of
licenses has been made for the cars
and the first four have been reserved
for the Governor, the State Highway
Department and the State Highway
Commissioner, with others given to
men who have held the same number
for years.
Thus far the Highway Department
has received $117,258 in fees for
licenses, the bulk of the applications
coming from Philadelphia, while about
one-sixth have come from Pittsburgh,
pbia.
The applications filed include 8.52<i
pneumatic tired. 1,152 solid tired, I
traction engine. 4 trailers. 294 motor
, cycles, 2,482 drivers. 473 dealers and
1.726 operators. Shipments of tags
for these licenses were started to-day
I and the tags are to be displayed on
, January 1 next and not before. No
■ cars can be operated on that date
i without the new licenses.

lishing a series of daily articles setting forth the condi
tions under which the jitney is permitted to operate in
this city.
•I We asked you to read those articles from day to day,
reserving until all had been published your decision on
this question "Shall Present Conditions Continue?"
Those articles have appeared.
*1 In each we have endeavored to adhere strictly to
facts—to present conditions in a clear, concise way—
and to point out how a continuance thereof will work

The time has now arrived for your answer.
Let's review these conditions briefly, for consid

The remedy for all of these conditions rests in your
hands.
CI There is before council an ordinance imposing rea
sonable regulations upon the jitney. Get into commu
nication with your councilmen—talk the matter over
with them—and insist that such restrictions shall be
imposed upon this, as upon other public carriers in the
same class, as will provide protection for YOU—morally,
physically and financially.
€| The jitney interests are talking to the councilmen—
silence on your part may be construed as lack of
interest—so it's highly important to you that you make
known your wishes in the matter without delay.
<1 See that YOU are protected—and then let the com
peting factors in public transportation fight out their
battles between themselves.
