How They Are Helping I'or the past several weeks, the women have been making fancy work and during the coming week candies and cakes will be made for sale at the bazar. The money derived from the affair will be used to help pay for construct ing the basement of the new building so that it can be used for suppers and lairs. There will be a big basement hall and a kitchen will adjoin and the women have arranged to secure the necessary funds to pay for this work. AV'hen the proposition for a new town hall and firehouse was launched a few years ago, the women of the town organized and decided to do what they could to bring about the improvement. They held festivals, suppers, bazars and entertainments and to the present time they have suc ceeded in turning over to the lire com pany the sum of S3OO. Work on the new building has al ready been started. Men are now at work completing the cellar excava tions and during the coming week the cellar wall will likely be started. Much headway om the excavating work was gained by the members of * .l re com P a n.v, together with many of the town's boys, assisting In the iiiKfnnp. Several women, too, showed that the.v were not afraid to work and during several evenings they used picks and shovels. Plan of Building Plans for the now building were drawn by M. L. Grossman, an archi tect of New Cumberland. The struc ture will be two stories high, thirty feet wide and sixty-five feet long, and will be erected at Second and Market streets. At the corner of the two streets on the first t'loor will bo a st °'" G '"oom. A dj°inins this to the rear w ill be another room which will likelv be used as a meeting place by the bor ough council. Alongside of this room will be another which will be used as a parlor or meeting room by the fire company. The entire rear of the first floor will he used to house the ap paratus. Entrance to the apparatus room will In the Market street side of the building. The second floor will be one big hall In which entertain ments and social affairs will be held. Tn this, too, a big stage will be erected. Entrance to the second floor will he gained through a door opening on the Second street side of the building The new structure will be built of red brick and will cost $4,143. At the last meeting of the borough coun cil an ordinance was enacted author izing the selling of bonds to the amount of $:;,000. This leaves a bal ance of $1,143, but It is already pro vided for. The Ladies' Auxiliary con tributed S3OO and the fire company 1 took SSOO from its treasury. When ' the cost of the building; was learned ft few weeks ago and the amount of I money that could be raised was I the fire company discovered there was a shortage of $343. Imme diately a committee was appointed to go through the town to solicit sub scriptions and within n few days the necessary sum was secured. The com mittee was composed of L. W Wan- £ au 5 h ' £■ Raker. H. R. Boose, r. O. Chapman. Ralph E. Schrack, J. G. Sheaffer, the Rev. S. E. Vance, £ T ™ lye £ s ' t w «nbaugli and E. ij. vVanbauffh.
