HILL AN ARDENT WOOER, SAYS GIRL Miss Covington Asserts That He Proposed With Stream ing Eyes Special to The Telegraph Del rolt, Mich., Oct. s.—Miss Lucille Covington came to Detroit from Al pena, Mich., and after days of silence | r.nd denial admitted that she had be gun a SIOO,OOO lireach of promise suit against the Rev. I")r. John Wesley llill, of New York. She also told the story of the alleged romance between her self and the minister which has led to the suit. Miss Covington told how the clergy man entreated her to be a mother to hif motherless children; how he wept in his imploring request for marriage; how he gave her in lieu of salary ?3,000 worth of Mexican mining stock end how Finley J. Shepard, whose wife was Miss Helen Gould, had ad vised her that the stock was worthless. "In the first place 1 want to dispel the opinion that I ever was a clerk in the employ of the Rev. Dr. Hill," she said. "I was the manager of a lyceum .bureau which had charge of his speak ing engagements. Never was I a sub ordinate to him. Since the last time 1 was associated with him in business I have been employed as field secretary of the McKlnley Rirthplace Memorial Commission in Ohio. I collected $125,000 for the memorial, which now I stands in McKinley's birthplace at Xiles, Ohio. "There is no truth in the statement that I owe a bill at the Park Avenue Hotel in New York. My attorney in New York. N..A. Schmidt, can deny beyond doubt all such stories. The story that Dr. Hill ever sent me SSOO or any other amount is false. One business deal I had with him I will disclose. He gave me $3,000 worth of stock in the Old Spanish Mining Com pany of Chihuahua, Mexico, in lieu of a year's commissions due me. The stock turned out to be worthless. Finley J. Shepard was the man who investigated this for me and so told me. That was the sum of my business relations with Mr. Shepard. "With tear.-? in his eyes Dr. Hill de clared in heart-broken accents that his wife was dead and that he needed me to make a home for his mother less children. "I met Dr. Hill five years ago. Al most at once his proposals of mar riage began. I did not know he was married, although I knew he had been married. He told me his wife was dead. His voice throbbed as he de scribed the condition of his motherless children. 'I need .you,' he said. 'A man in my position in public life, traveling about the country, needs a wife to make a home for his little' brood. You are so sympathetic and I admire you so for your sound sense, your beauty, your warm heart and splendid soul.' "That is «he way he talked to me. I* makes me very angry and indignant the way Bainbridge Colby talks and the statesments he makes. He knows nothing whatever about the case ex cept what Dr. Hill tells him. When I get on the stand in New York some, things will come out that will show how exactly right I am. "I dislike much to go on with the whole horrible story of the basts for my suit. I want to say one word to Dr Hill, who has passed snap judg ment on me. before X begin. That is 'Judge not, that ye be not judged'." According to several naturalized Greeks in this city, the ads call for various classes according to age. So far, men from 21 to 4 0 have been summoned. It is not believed that any large number of the Greeks in this city or vicinity will answer the call. Should they ever return to their native land, after not answering the call now, the minimum penalty is on imprisonment of five years. The only explanation the Greeks in this city offer because of the call, is that their country mity be on the verge of war and the government officials are making preparations for defense.
