Chief of Erie's Fire
Department Is Dead
Erie, Pa.. Aug. 20.—John J. McMahon,
chief of the Erie fire department, died
er.rly to-day from injuries received
two weeks ago in the Mill i reek flood.
Chief McMahon whle attempting a
rescue in the flood area was swept
away and for a time his name was
listed with the dead. Several hours
later he was found floating in a mass
of wreckage and taken to a hospital.
He was severely injured and a few
days ago developed typhoid-pneu
monia. He had been chief of the fire
department since 1893.

the Italian composer, arrived in Venice
to-day from a visit to the front. Dur
ing his trip he met Gabriele d'Annun
zio. the poet, who is serving as a lieu
tenant In the army. D'Annunzio has
agreed to write the libretto of an opera
dealing withe European war in an alle
gorical manner. Puccini is to compose
the score.
FRUIT LINER MISSING

New Orleans, La.. Aug. 20.—The
United Fruit liner Marowljne, overdue
from Belize, British Honduras, since
Monday night, had not been heard
from to-day. The vessel has aboard
35 passengers and a crew estimated at
fioin 25 to 40.
